I have had multiple problems trying to install XP Pro SP2 on my Mac Pro using Boot Camp 1.1.2.

First time I tried to install it gave me the hal.dll error. From there I formatted the drive again and reinstalled. All went great until I got to the second install screen. From there all the way into windows desktop the display would only show 4bit color @ 640x480. Even after running the Boot Camp drivers CD still wouldn't change display settings. Formatted and Re-installed again. Into the second install screen (the one where you put the CD-Key etc) it would just keep BSODing me with a IRQL_NO_EQUAL_etc etc.

Specs:

Mac Pro Quad 2.66Ghz
ATI X1900 XT
1GB

Dell 2005FPW 20" LCD

Any ideas anyone?

same thing happened to me

I had to get an old display of mine and use till I could install the ATI drivers. I downloaded the ATI drivers to another computer and threw them on a flash drive and then load my Mac Pro. That solved the display problem.

You don't actually use the drivers that come on the Windows CD, do you? I wouldn't do that on a native WinTel machine much less my Mac.

It was two problems. One was the ATI drivers issue which I fixed and the other was the Windows install disk wasn't SP2 (but was marked SP2 by mistake I guess). Fixed both issues and the install went fine.

Also ran into another one that maybe some people wondered about. The "Base System" driver won't install off the disk for some reason. You need to go to the Intel website and download the 5000 Series Lan Drivers. From there you can just follow the instructions since this is an issue with the chipset not the Mac Pro.
