Is it ridiculous what Apple charges for RAM?

Should I get the 'book at stock 512 and upgrade it myself?

What about harddrives? Would it be worth it to get the smallest option and then upgrade it personally?

I've installed HDs in desktops before so I cant imagine it'd be much harder with laptops, especially with the macbook.

However i've never done anything with RAM, but i've been told that "it's a snap - literally." Is there a website or something somewhere that could guide me?

ifixit.com has a guide they just put up for both of those things. Shouldn't be too hard. I recommend buying your own RAM and hard drive if you're comfortable with that, and selling the old stuff and using the old drive as backup.

Yes the prices are insane.

Do both yourself or just the Ram. The hard drive upgrades don't seem too bad from Apple.

On the Macbook you will need:

DDR2 PC2-5300 200pin SO-DIMMs
2.5" 9.5mm high Sata hard drive

RAM, definetly do yourself. Depending on the hard drive, it might just be easier and worth the few extra bucks to get Apple to do it. It costs $45 extra to bump up to 80GB but an 80GB costs more than that and you have to go through the hassle of selling it

If you want 80GB then get it done from Apple. No real harm in that.

But in case you need 100 or 120, BUYING HDD FROM APPLE IS A SIN.

I recently upgraded my RAM and just out of curiosity took out the HDD. OMG. That was it. It`s as easy as changing a disc in your Slot Loading Drive. Even a 6 year old can change the HDD(just make sure he doesn undo the screws though ). Installing OSX on your new drive is a no brainer either. So I`d definitely recommend DIY if you want a 120/100 GB HDD.

Just make sure you get a SATA HDD only as kevin.rivers said. It`s very easy to befooled with a UATA disc for a SATA disc,

Sorry to hijack the thread a bit, but can the Macbook take 7,200rpm hard drives? I'm doubtful because the Online Store doesn't give you the option to upgrade to such a hard drive.

There's no reason it shouldn't, as long as they're SATA drives. It's most likely not an option to BTO because it's not meant as a Pro machine, so most consumers wouldn't want to shell out the extra dough.
