Bug... in my screen... dead

I'm currently on holiday in the UK and in the evening these really TINY little bugs come out. Anything white it lands on.

This evening, while surfing (ie mostly white screens) INSIDE MY HOTEL ROOM, I noticed a tiny little fleck moving around my monitor. I tried to flick it off, to no avail, it was INSIDE the monitor!

I decided, rather than squishing it, I should hope it wanders off screen, flies out, whatever. No. It decided to die about three inches in and one inch down in the top left corner of my screen.

So WTF do I do? It's not abuse. It's never been dropped, there aren't any cracks that weren't there by the factory, I wasn't using it outside. It's MADDENING.

Should I take it to a UK Apple store and ask the Genius Bar if, since I' on Holiday, they can take the screen apart and fix it while I wait? Should I just wait until I get back to the US on Friday?

Has anything like this happened to anyone else? :confused:

What kind of computer have you got? This has been known to happen to Apple Displays and iMacs and I have had it happen on my computer where the bug died in the bottom corner. Luckily, I had the screen replaced anyway as part of a logic board replacement.

MacBook Air, Rev. A 1.6 80GB HDD.

Already had the the keyboard replaced once and the hard drive replaced once.

i would see the apple store. maybe they fix it for cheap or even free.

if not i would wait for a few weeks because the bug might shrink as it dries and you can shake it to a location where you can't see it.

Aww poor little thunder-fly.

I dont think there's one computer monitor here at work which doesn't have at least one decaying thunder-fly under the screen.

So the black midgies have struck again huh ! (Also called corn flies or thunder flies)

The exact same thing happened to me a few years ago with an Iiyama 20" LCD which cost me about £800 when it was new.

The little bugger crawled to the middle of the screen as I watched in horror, hoping he would just carry on. Oh no.... he died right in the middle. Heat exhaustion I reckon !

And there he stayed until this day. My nephew has that screen now, complete with bug years later (he wont shrink and fall off)

What little juices he has will decompose and glue the little cretin to your LCD, which incidentally will be toasting him nicely, turning all those juices to a glue like substance !

Arrrgh... it annoyed the hell out of me until I got a new LCD a year or so later.


I know your pain.

haha I got a dead ant in my old power mac screen you know in the plastic case that surrounds it im not gonna take it out though its my little pet!

you tried flipping the screen upside down and flicking at the thing? Maybe you can work it loose or at least move it more into the corner.

No it is hard. Don't make it think it's a piece of cake while giving him the chance to brick it... If you think it's easy, you could tell him exactly how. I wouldn't disassemble 'that' part of the monitor, it doesn't even have any screws and if the display needs to go off before the screen can be separated from the frame (most likely), then it takes at least 30 minutes to do it with 3 dozen screws going off (with some torx), that is, if you know what you're doing... Not to mention warranty is gone. That is a seriously risky advice, wonder if you've done it or not.

I wouldnt be so fast to crack open the MBA's LCD either. Bugs are not supposed to be able to get under the LCD anyway so I am sure Apple will fix it.

Considering they can't repair the keyboard in the MBA in-store at the Genius Bar (takes too much time away from other repairs) I can't even imagine WTF I have to do with a screen.

I'll take it in first thing.

You definitely don't want to try taking the screen apart. Too hard to repair.

Since it's so close to the edge you could also try holding something that vibrates against the screen and use that as a method to work the fly loose and have it fall out the side. :D

Certainly not going to sell at the right price... What is the point if the MBA with a bug is sold at $300?
He's certainly getting nice advices.
