Hello,

I have a Macbook Pro 2020 with the latest OS version.
If I open Safari and try to right click a image and select copy image, then paste it somewhere else, its just a link not the image.
For example:

Then if try to paste it here this is the outcome:

This is what is in the clipboard:
1610386934045.png

In chrome for example, if I right click -> copy image in the clipboard I can find the image not the URL.

I've reported this bug but with no luck, is this something isolated just to me or does anyone else have this problem?

How to reproduce:
Find an image on reddit/macrumors right click the image and select copy image, go to finder->edit-> show clipboard, there should be the image, not the link to the image!
It seems that copy image works like copy image url should work!

Thanks!

In Safari, using your image and copy image, the image pastes fine into Notes, Pages, Messages, Pixelmator, to name a few. I do see only the url in Finder > Edit > Show Clipboard. I too would expect to the see image there and that it should behave differently than show the image url, but that's not a function I've ever used. Is that something you use regularly? Will you be reporting it to Apple as a bug?

Wow, I didn't even know there was such a thing… what do you need this clipboard window for?

The clipboard is virtual. It contains whatever you copy until you do another copy. Just paste it. You don't need an intermediary window. Whatever images you copy from Safari or another app will in fact paste as an image in other apps.

There is no problem here.

When right-clicking, "Copy Image Address" and "Copy Image" are right above/below one another, it is possible you are clicking "Copy Image Address" instead of the latter. Behaviour works as expected here, use it all the time.
can you try to go to reddit for example, search for an image and right click -> copy image then try to paste it on reddit, facebook?

Here, i copied your image and pasted it right into the McRumald forum!

If ti works with Reddit or F-book? Depends on their programming, has nothing to do with the Mac clipboard.

Ok, if this is not a safari bug, how do you explain different behaviour?

Take a look at this:

Using Safari go to reddit for example:

Code:
https://www.reddit.com/r/AbsoluteUnits/comments/kzimb2/elvis_from_australian_reptile_park_is_an_absolute/

Right click the image and select copy image.
Then go to Finder -> Edit -> Show Clipboard:

Now open Chrome and visit the same link, right click -> copy image, then go back to finder -> edit -> show clipboard:
1610968503209.png

Now the image is the clipboard.

Why there is a different behaviour of right click copy image in Safari than on Chrome?

The same happens to me. I just tried copying an image from Facebook to post it in Facebook using Safari. Right clicked -> Copy Image [I did not clicked on Copy Image Address]. When I try and paste it I get the URL. I tried the same thing on Chrome and it copied successfully. I discovered that:

Copying an image on Safari and pasting it on Facebook.com on Chrome = didn't work: I got the URL.
Copying the image from Chrome and pasting it on Facebook.com on Safari = worked: I got the image.

Such a weird thing to happen. I already partially use Chrome to watch YouTube and Twitch, because I watch them with the speed up and Safari messes up the voice pitch and Chrome doesn't. I would really like to use Safari as my only browser, but this things, despite being so small, are quite annoying 🤔

Just realised this thread if from Jan but I'm having the same problem in December.
Previously I always used Chrome, and have been switching over to Safari.

As Ritsuka said the issue is Safari copies both the URL representation and the image representation, and some apps default to the text as the first option.

For example, copy an image and go to TextEdit and paste it there, and you'll see the image.
Paste it in the Messenger app and you get just the URL (even though Messenger is capable of having images pasted).
Seems Facebook is the biggest offender here, wonder if they prefer the URL to lower bandwidth or just missed it during development.

If an app is keen on using the text representation (when you'd prefer it to use the image one), I think your only option is to use Chrome, or use Safari, paste the image in TextEdit, and copy it out of there (at which point it loses the text representation).

I don't know about the Safari issue but a really good workaround/solution is to have the 'screenshot' app in the dock.
Many times you will find that a 'save' or 'copy' image is disabled, or you just want a bit of the image, or the result is just way too big a file size and you have to resize it.
So overall, just taking a screenshot of what you want is way simpler and way better.
Sometimes you might also want an image with the text underneath it, or what's next to it. You can usually capture a video as an image too but you can record as well.
I find the 'selection' option to be the best most often because in a click and a couple of drags I have what I want and in nearly all cases the file size it already small enough to share.
When you've taken a screenshot you get a little pop up of it (bottom right screen for me) and it's very simple then to share. You can even share it without saving it.
The whole thing so much more useful than just using the 'copy' command.
You will be able to choose a selection, window or screen, and where to save the shot be default.
You will also have a floating toolbar which will remember where it's put when opened the next time so you can keep it somewhere out of the way.
I use the screenshot function all the time.
You will find it under utilities

Why there is a different behaviour of right click copy image in Safari than on Chrome?

Why do you care what the clipboard shows if it pastes correctly? Using the example in post 8 showing the clipboard defaults to showing the link, but the image pastes quite perfectly. The Copy 'em app shows the clipboard image so it's just an issue as to how Safari choses to display the clipboard.

Just love how people on these forums think the person must be stupid, or are just like, "why would you ever want to do that?” Like... because they do. (Or, “you must have been drunk when you tried this, it did not behave the same way for me...”) I have the same issue, pasting into Roam Research. Clearly, unlike the behavior in Chrome, because Safari is Mac it is trying to do something “clever”. With other Mac apps (just tested in Pages), it pastes as an image. In a “non-compliant” app, it pastes as a URL. A relatively efficient workaround was to Command+Tab over to say, Pages, and paste it in (it becomes a graphic). And then, do a Command+C, then Command+Tab over to the actual app I want to paste it into, and do a Command+V. Well, okay, I guess. It does work.
