The mail application was working great for me for a while, but all of the sudden I have a strange bug. Whenever I send a message, the "sending" status bar properly begins to move along at the bottom of the screen, but then before it completes, the screen momentarily goes to black and the iPhone home screen appears. When I click back on the mail icon, the message I sent is still there in what appears to be unsent form -- despite the fact that the message did actually get sent (I checked with a few test emails to myself). Then if I click "cancel" I have to go through the extra step of telling the iPhone that I don't want to save a copy in my draft folder. I've tried resetting the phone . . . to no avail.

Has anyone else seen this bug?

The screen going blank is the app crashing. I've seen this in mail, maps, and Safari. Try resetting the phone then resending.

I've seen apps crashing when faced with large data. Like I asked for all starbucks in texas (in maps), or load an mp3 in safari, or download a large e-mail in mail ---- All these crashed the apps.

My outgoing mail is having the same problem. it starts to send and then the screen goes black and to the home screen. i am also using yahoo mail. one thing i noticed is that when i try to send out an email from the yahoo site on my computer, it always asks me to enter in some verification letters. could this be the problem? the iPhone is trying to send out the emails, but without the verification. Oh and i also got an error message saying something about the imap settings. but i haven't seen it again since that one time.

Exotic? :) No, just normal short messages containing text only. The only possible change on my part is that last night I converted my free yahoo mail account to a paid one in order to get rid of the ads in the signature line.

Yahoo Send Mail Failure / Crash

I have been having the same issue. I have attempted to isolate the problem with little success.

I have two new Yahoo accounts. One free account and one Plus account. The problem occurs on either of the two accounts when tested. I tested each account individually after completely performing a factory restore.

Tests have been conducted in both EDGE and WiFi modes to isolate any possibility of connection issues that we recenlty experienced with EDGE.

Both accounts have been working perfectly until yesterday or early this morning.

Given that this is the only "Push" solution provided, I am very upset that Apple select Yahoo as a provider when Gmail has proven to be very reliable on my BlackBerry with their push technology.

Not to overstate other peoples ramblings, but I fear the providers for the iPhone (AT&T and Yahoo as of now) can seriously damage the iPhones standing for reliability and stability.

Yes, I am having the same issue as of today. I did find that my messages were getting sent, even though mail appeared to be crashing. I only tried it with Yahoo, not sure if it is also the case with Gmail. I am truly disappointed in the Yahoo service, push seems very random.. As much as I want to use it, I am close to just killing my account and using Gmail. As it is, I am only using Yahoo for the push, in fact, like most others, I am setting Gmail to forward my messages to Yahoo.

I sure hope Gmail supports push soon so I can ditch Yahoo altogether..

agree x100

Yahoo seemed to work fine for me over the weekend but it has been so unpredicatble and sporadic. I did numerous tests with both yahoo and comcast addresses over EDGE and WIFI. There are times when I get emails from my non push account prior to yahoo'sl. Really annoying.

I tried turning off the device, resetting it, deleting and redoing my mail account settings . . . nothing. This bug won't go away.

I'm having the same issue and I'm using a .mac account. It won't send mail. It gives me an error that reads "Check the account settings for the outgoing server "smtp.mac.com". Unfortunately, i can't find any settings in Mac mail to change.

Anybody having this issue with .Mac mail?

The only reason I'm using it at all is because i'm trying to send a picture and the lack of mms messaging leaves me no choice. I normally never use my mac mail, but i figured that account would work the best on the iPhone......

I am on the phone waiting for an Apple Tech Specialist to address the issue. I have been on on the phone with Apple for about 2 hours.

They have confirmed the postings on this group and various others and are aware of the issue.

I completed the call with Apple.

Thay have successfully reproduced the issue and the Mail application crashes everytime you attempt to send an email through Yahoo. That said, they stated that I should still attempt to contact Yahoo about the problem and they will submit the bug specific to the Mail application to their development team.

In the end, I believe that we better hope this issue gets resolved if anyone at Yahoo cares, otherwise, I did not feel this issue was deemed serious by anyone I spoke to at Apple.

Yep - crashes on sending an e-mail with "test" in the subject line, and "sent via my iPhone" in the body. This is a serious bug.

Note - while mail on the iPhone crashed, the message did reach its destination.

I believe I may have found a possible fix, but performed two actions and can't confirm what did it.

1. I logged into the web interface for Yahoo and sent a test message. This prompted their spam protection that I confirmed.
2. I upgraded the account to a Plus account.

Either passing their spam protection scheme or activating a Plus account is now allowing me to send emails without problems.

You sir - I owe you a case of beer :)

I just sent a message from the web interface - went through the spam screen - and now I can send messages from my iPhone.

Apple should write this up. People are going to setup accounts and go directly to their phone (like I did) - never thinking "hmm - maybe I should send a message first"

I've had the same issue as everyone here and had tried the sending email and putting in spam code but it still comes back once in a while. I called Apple spoke to them then they had me restore the software TWICE but not from a backup. As a new iPhone. So I did that and that didnt work so I called back with my case number and they told me they would put me on with a Apple Specialist. Well he didnt tell me nothing that the other person didnt so I knew it was kind of pointless. Hes suppose to call me back today to "update" ME but I suggest everyone goes and calls Apple so they can fix this bug as before I read this thread I thought I was the only one with the issue. He never "heard" of it either... :(

I find that I need to reenter the spam code once every 4 or 5 hours or so.

So much fun.

Clearing the "Outbox"

Replied to an e-mail this morning via AOL and EDGE. Dialog box said something like "...can't connect...putting in Outbox". Reply was actually sent. Now, whenever I open Mail, I see "1 Unsent Message" on bottom of sceeen. After connecting and downloading new mail, system attempts to send the allegedly Unsent Message and I get one of three dialog boxes...Server Refused the Address...No Recipient Indicated...etc. Have subsequently received and sent numerous e-mails successfully...but the Unsent Message persists. Anybody know how to get rid of this nonsense?
