I am looking into the possibility of "building" my own 32gb iPhone 3G and am wondering if anyone could provide input as to how realistic this would be.

This article gives the part numbers of the stacks of Toshiba flash memory in an 8gb iPod touch.

If the memory in the iPhone 3G is the same physical size and has the same pinouts as the memory contained in the 32gb iPod touch, and Toshiba is willing to sell me just the 32gb memory, what is to stop me from buying an 8gb iphone 3G and replacing the memory with the 32gb stacks?

I was unable to find out whether or not the first generation iPhone uses the same memory as the touch, but would assume that it would only make business sense, allowing apple to buy their memory in greater quantity at a lesser price.

Thoughts?

While they are the same pin-outs, the iPhone has half the number of memory chips as the iPod Touch to make space for the phone components.

iPhone has one 8gb or one 16gb stack, whereas the 32gb touch has two 16gb stacks. So it won't work out quite that well I'm afraid.
