hi there,

I am planning to build in an external display switch into my intel-imac 24 (the white one).
if I am watching a movie (via imac) on my external tv-panel it really annoys me, that I can´t switch of just the imac display and besides I think a big display like this consumes lots of energy.

for opening I was thinking to use this tutorial:
http://home.comcast.net/~woojo/DFFA53A0-F23D-4541-9015-481FD3B6532E/iMac_Disassembly.html

my questions:
1. did any of you guys already build in such a switch or has any experiences with it?
2. is it easy to find the power-cables to the display inside the mac, or does anybody happen to have a tutorial/foto of them?
3. I was planning to put an ordinary on/off-switch inbetween the display-power-cable.- can this be done, or do I need a special switch so the display won´t be harmed?

many thnx in advance for any help!!

The iMac display is not a separate monitor, and the iMac is essentially a vertical laptop, so the display is built in in the same way that a laptop screen is built in to a laptop. The power cables will be in amongst the same cable bundle as the data cables, and I wouldn't recommend that you start chopping about with them.
This sounds like a pretty hefty project, and frankly, unless you're an engineer/technician with experience with integrated displays and proprietary interfaces, I would recommend that you just put up with it. Besides, TFT displays are relatively light on the power (for a 24 inch, I would estimate ~80-100W), to the point where it's not that much worse than watching a film with a TV and a stand-alone upscaling DVD player)
