Hello, I am wondering if there is any 3rd party plugin that would provide systemwide thesaurus functionality just like Apple has included system wide spell check. This would be very useful to me as the only feature I lack in Textedit that would compel me to use word is the thesaurus. I would much rather use Textedit. I have tried searching versiontracker......anyone have any leads? Thanks!

Ya, that would be great. I have been working my master thesis for about the last 9 months . . . writing it all on textedit (this mac is microsoft free) and I thought that it was really missing as well.
Most of time I just ended up using sherlock (linked to dictionary.com) as a thesaurus. That's a little slow.
But I must admit, the ability to get your mac to read out any highlighted text quickly and easily has been a godsend for basic proofing. If it doesn't make sense when the mac reads it out, then you probably wrote it wrong. Just make sure that you pick a better voice that Trinoids or Pipeorgan. . . LOL

Try Nisus Thesaurus. It can be used as either an application or a service, so it can be used in TextEdit by selecting a word, then going to TextEdit->Services->Nisus Thesaurus->Look Up Selection, or by selecting a word and typing command-shift-comma.

All the layout happens in Quark . . . I can't stand how any of the word processors handle imbedded images. (it is an masters of architecture, so that's a big part of the thesis)
But to answer you question a little more precisely, the footnotes are created in a separate document and inserted into a separate set of text fields in Quark. Maybe not as easy as in Word, but it makes the image and image text layout worlds easier and better looking.
All reference material is also handled by Endnote.
EndNote Rules! (though I've had some stability issues with it).
Just finished up my thesis--oral exam tomorrow afternoon. Can't imagine writing it in TextEdit. EndNote becomes ridiculously powerful when coupled with Word. I sort of understand if you have an anti-Microsoft bias (I don't...there's a windows machine in the other room)...and Office works wonderfully for me.
As far as thesaurus...there's a fairly crappy one built in to word. I personally try not to use a thesaurus, because I feel like I can tell when people are using one...but that's just my take.
