I'm currently involved in a project to get a bunch of public domain books online.

I have a lot of files named things like "20190119_078.jpg". These need to be changed to something like "44.jpg" taking their name from the page number.

What I'm using right now is carousal view (the 5k resolution might help), and selecting rename from the context menu. What' I'd like is something that saves me from opening contextual menus 900 times.

Any suggestions? Maybe assigning a shortcut to the rename file command? (Is such a thing possible?)

The return key is shortcut for rename in Finder, I don't think it gets much easier, but if your are using another app, you can set up keyboard shortcuts for any entry in the top-menu by going to System preferences->Keyboard->Shortcuts->App Shortcuts and press the "+" button.

Finder also has a bulk rename function built-in. But sounds like your at matching op agains another documents pages, so not sure it is of much help. Select the files you want to rename and select Menu->File->Rename ### Items..

I use A Better Finder Rename. It has a lot of options for how the renaming is done. (Simple renames, adding information before or after the name, values options for the new names [number, alphabetic, date, etc]).

It turned out to be as simple as adding a keyboard shortcut in the system preferences.

Being uncreative, I chose the most convenient key combo that beeped.

I edit my photos in Lightroom and when I need to change the file name I just change them in the Export process. My photos are all tagged so I can access them on my hard drive. It doesn't change the original file names.
