After a wait, I received the Bullstrap leather iPhone case (the Contemporary model). However, I noticed that the black dye from the case tends to run. Specifically after exposure to hand sanitizer. Scenario where this occurs is after applying Purell to your hands, and then handling the iPhone in the case.

If you put some Purell on napkin, and then rub it on the case, the black dye stains the napkin easily.

Anyone else encounter this issue? I don't seem to recall this being an issue with the Apple leather cases.

I have a black RL and Luckycoin and this absolutely does not happen. This is just Bullstrap known quality control issues IMO.

What on earth is this post? Do not use hand sanitizer with any leather case! It’s alcohol, and that does not mix well with leather of any kind.

I’ve never had any bs leather case “run”, and the comments about the leather being poor quality are just incorrect. They do use a wax and finishing that’s different to others, but they always have done, and state as much on their product description.

The tanning process itself is no different to any other company, and the leather is actually thicker and of higher quality than most.

I’ve owned, and used probably more cases than most… Andar, Keyway, Nomad, Ryan London, Bandwerk, Luckycoin, Lonli, Bellroy, Satchel & Page and of course Bullstrap which is as good as any of the others mentioned and better than most as well. The hate they receive is comical on here at times.

I'm not advocating for applying Purell to the leather case! My main concern is that with just regular casual exposure to Purell, say handling the case right after using Purell, the dye comes off too easily and ends up staining your hands. And the stain on the hands is actually pretty hard to get off surprisingly.

(I don't remember this dye issue being an issue with the Apple leather case.)

I had the green Apple leather case on my iPhone 14 Pro Max, and it reacted to hand sanitizer by darkening where it came into contact. It didn't stain my hand though.

+1 on this 🙌🏻

OP-I have used Bullstrap for a few years myself and just got my black edition contemporary case a week ago. Even took it to Disneyland the next day! I’ve never ever seen the issue you have here- my new case is absolutely wonderful and high quality. Like @RCC said, the sanitizer will not play nice with any leather whatsoever.

It amazes me that people do the craziest things to their cases (and their iPhones!) then wonder why there’s an issue. I work for one of the major US cell carriers and it’s absolutely gross and obscene what people expose their phones to (then wonder why it quit working etc).

You’ve done nothing wrong. You should be able to use your case and perform everyday activities without this mess. I’ve always used RYAN LONDON and now even Luckycoin because of bullstraps quality control issues.

It's kind of insane that some people have a clear hate for Bullstrap here, never knew that before. My lucky coin case is close to the bullstrap but maybe just a step below but for the price I would recommend it to everyone if it had a closed bottom.

With that said I absolutely love my bullstrap case and dont get the hate.

I don’t get it either… I absolutely love this case I have now. I’ve used Bullstrap in the past and NEVER ever had an issue. I just didn’t prefer the open bottom (of course personal preference). But I still used them anyway. I love their leather and I never had an issue with any customer service I had to deal with.

My husbands Ryan London def feels different than my case (even wears a little differently than last Bullstrap cases) and tbh I prefer my Bullstrap to his Ryan London and am really glad I was patient to wait for my order. Even the button cutout for the camera is so well done I don’t even think I’ll need to get the updated version when it comes out. I am really really satisfied with my purchases from Bullstrap and I pretty much have it all from them now.

I honestly haven't tried the Ryan London so I cannot comment on it either way but I know that you and I both prefer closed bottom cases and the leather wrap around the camera ring so the Ryan London is ruled out for us. Though I still dont hate their cases because of that, lol.

I don’t either. My husbands case is nice enough! But I just couldn’t pull the trigger because of the metal camera ring. He’s been coloring the chipping in with sharpie 😂 we are both pretty careful people but his case still managed to chip in the ring area.

What I really don’t care for is the wear around the lip. Idk how to describe it but here’s a pic for reference. Bullstrap bourbon on our old phones never did that that I could remember. My leather on my new case feels more substantial than his. But he really loves his case and can live with the camera ring etc.

Also to note his front facing lip is a little higher than mine which is the same around the camera control button. His button is harder for me to press than my Bullstrap. Just little nuances worth mentioning. But they’re all nice cases in their own way it just boils down to personal preference

Having used both over several years I wouldn’t call it a hate at all just user experience. Some have the complete opposite experience others do. I’ve never had a single issue with a RL case after about 10 of them I’d say.

BS is the complete opposite. The leather each company uses on their open bottom/closed bottom cases are different. For example as noted here RL open bottom case is much different leather than their closed bottom. I for one cannot use a closed bottom case just ruins the entire experience.

It’s all preference and subjective also. People can only speak on their personal experiences.

100%. Everyone has their preferences and experiences 🥰

I honestly wish I could use a closed bottom case. I’d 💯 purchase that bullstrap contemporary. Their design on closed bottom for me is so much cleaner than RL.
It is imo having both RL and Bullstrap at my house to compare I agree with this. But I get it if you don’t like closed bottom, then don’t do it. ESP when you have options! I’d do open bottom if there was no other option and even then I’d have to think about it

I hear ya! I had a closed bottom on just to try it was a coworkers. Came off faster than it went on lol. I’ve used open bottom my entire life and never once had a single blemish on any phone not to mention the user experience. But I do work in a suit environment.

I mean I've never had an issues with the open bottom case getting my phone scratched either and honestly it probably is more comfortable to use too with the swiping on the iPhone X and up. I think for me it's just the look of it that I prefer on the closed bottom.

My wife just got the 16 pro max two days ago and is awaiting her Case Mate Kate Spade case to arrive. So I gave her the option to use my Lucky Coin, BS, or Caudate Sythensis case I have.

She stole my BS case for now, darn it. lol. So I switched back to the Lucky Coin. The leather definitely feels different now that I have been using the BS now. Not sure how I like it now, I think it's probably that I just got use to the BS.

You seem to really like the Ryan London and I want to give it a shot, but I notice my Lucky Coin comes off pretty easily on the bottoms. Is that not an issue on the RL, or am I just too use to the closed bottom cases?

Honestly I would like to have all the leather cases and switch them out every so often.

First of all you sir are an awesome husband! I hear ya with the look of the closed bottom. I’d have to say all closed bottoms in my experience will come off easier. I do notice that RL black case fits snugger than their saddle brown offerings over the years.

When I say come off I mean easier to pull off on the bottom corners not by any means does it or has it ever popped off without me initiating it. 🍻

Well thank you sir!! Once she realized it was the one I have been using she tried giving it back but she is way more clumsy and figured it was the better protection one for her.

I'm very tempted to order the RL, I think if they release the CC one this year I will pick it up even though I don't use it very much.
