I have a movie on my computer and I want to burn it to a DVD...how do I do it

Or you could use the build into Finder Burn folder.

But aren't those modern DVD standalone players capable of playing files like .avi and .mp4, even when encoded with Divx or .h263/4?

I only had DVD player in my life in 2004, but already then they were capable of playing content like video files or pictures, without proper preparation and making a video DVD with .vob files and such.

I suppose it could, depending on what format the file is and the particular DVD player. But, I've bought one or two DVD players in that time frame that couldn't play divx (for instance).

In any event, they still do need to be in a particular file structure. I just checked the manual on my new Panasonic Blu-ray, and it needs DivX in a particular hierarchy.
