Burning dvd/cd's

I feel like an Idiot but, How do I burn a video i downloaded to a dvd, or music to a cd on my mac pro?

I assume you want the video burned to a DVD for playback in a DVD player? You'll have to use something like Toast for that. You just select the Video tab, then select DVD-video under formats. Then just drag the file into the main window, if you double click it in there, you can set stuff like bookmarks and do any cropping you may want to do.

For the music, you can just use iTunes for that. Just create a playlist with the music you want and click the Burn Disc button in the upper right hand corner.

iDVD is for processing DV format footage from a camcorder or video camera. For AVI files and such. you need Toast, which converts the format into MPEG2 (used by DVD players) then burns to disk.

Toast is available from Roxio's web site as a download if you're in a hurry, but you have to purchase it. It isn't free.

why couldn't you use iDVD?

You can use iDVD (you just drag in files, as long as Quicktime supports the file, that should work) but Toast is the quicker method if you don't want o deal with customizing menus, formatting the menus elements etc. Toast, you can just drag them in, turn off the menu themes, just set the disc to play automatically or not, set bookmarks and hit burn and just let it do it's thing. Either method works fine.

Tried to research that awhile back but the alternatives didn't really pan out, at least back then. I know FFMPEG can do it, but the interface on that is pretty complicated unless you spend a lot of time working with it.

I am not a Toast fan. Instead I use Dragon Burn.
