Burning DVD, need help!!

Hello, i have searched and i can not find the answer to this. I am trying to burn a movie onto a DVD that will play on any DVD player. The file i am trying to burn is an avi file, but i have toast 8 and tried using that to burn the dvd. once it was burned i put it into my dvd player and it said it was an unreadable disc. someone please help!
 
imovie wont let me put avi files into it for some reason. also isnt toast supposed to be alot better? that is what i was told which is why i purchased.

Did a PC user tell you that Toast was better? hehe ....

Use iDVD to create DVD movies that will play in your player. I think that I have used .avi files. Use iDVD help to find out.

If you are using the latest version of iMovie 08 then I don't think that you can insert chapters. However, I believe that you can download the older version of iMovie form the Apple website and you can insert chapters.

ok i hate iMovie and iDVD. can somsone please help me use toast if they know how to use it? i can not get a dvd to work in my dvd player. it will work on computers but not in dvd players
 
Dont use idvd, its not worth the headache.

And Toast should be working. ARe you going to video then to DVD video? Just drop the file and select whatever menu you'd like and burn.

Edit: and it might take a while encoding because its an avi file.

...and with the least support of off the shelf DVD players.

DVD-R is actually the common format. DVD+R adds support for DVD-RAM disks and faster access but fails on a lot of commercial DVD players on the market.

Toast is in indeed, far more feature rich. I use Toast over iDVD for burning, gives far better and consistent results. Load up Perian (http://perian.org/) for any codecs you may need, if you have compressed avi files, then use Toast to burn as a Video disc/disk.
 
Most stand-alone players won't play .avi files. You'll need to convert it to DVD format first, using a tool like VisualHub. Then you can burn it using Toast.

That's what I used to do, but then I bought a set-top DVD player that plays .avi's for US$40 at WalMart, and now I don't have to convert them, I can play the .avi directly.

Despite all of the above replies, I bet that's your problem.

Which is what I said, anyone who is familiar with Toast knows that to set it as Video disk/disc will convert to the required format - DVD. There is no need for VisualHub. Thats just two stepping when one is all that is required. Perhaps you should have read the help files.
 
i used to use idvd, but that never really worked very well for me. I litereally just downloaded some software called Burn (line at bottom of this page http://www.coolosxapps.net/2007/03/21/burn-17u-free-cd-and-dvd-burner-for-your-mac/ )

I quickly cut a snippet from a movie, converted it to avi using visual hub, then burnt it as a video cd using burn. It worked extremely well, and plays like a normal dvd when in the dvd player (no menus though). So, I'm gussing it'll burn the full movie just as well when I try later.

I've just checked visual hub, which I usually just use to convert to mp4 for my ipod, and it seems it has some pretty simple settings to allow you to burn as a proper dvd. Will give that a go in the near future as well.
