Burning DVD+R in Superdrive

Last weekend I bought a pack of DVD+Rs instead of DVD-Rs by mistake. I seem to recall reading a few months back, that DVD+Rs could be used in most Superdrive equiped Macs after one of the software updates.

Just tried burning something using one of these DVD+Rs and the drive spat it back out at me. Am i still limited to DVD-R ?

I thought only iDVD supported +R in particular? I never saw anything about OS X as a whole supporting it.

I read iDVD 5 supports DVD+R, so I thought the hardware should support that, too. Having this in mind I tried to burn a DVD+R using Toast 6 and it works just fine

I'm using iDVD 4 / iLife 4 at the moment.
Still, I had thought there was some development recently to allow the use of disks other than DVD-R.

just a question: is your superdrive a +/-R/RW drive or is it like the 'older' drives a -R/RW... the newer ones like in my G5 are dualformat, but before apple chose to support the -R/RW format later they saw all teh PC guys moving over from +R/RW to dualformat and they followed...

if your drive is -R/RW only there will not be a firmware to help you out on that...

I burned +&-R/RW with my drive without a glitch...

The bses way to find the capabilities of an optical drive is to look at the output of "drutil info" in Terminal. I happen to have an AlBook with the same drive and it does indeed show DVD+R as one of the supported DVD-Write modes.

The material was about iDVD from iLife'05 supporting DVD+Rs. I suspect it may take until Tiger for the OS supplied burning functions to support DVD+R.

So getting iLife'05 sound like the best way to go for you.

:edit2: I did check at roxio and its supported for toast 6x so if you use that it will burn those disks (normally) I don't use iApps (except iTunes) so I don't know about the support in iLife and others... never used the diskburning stuff from apple anyway because I like to have options when I burn and toast gives you just that :edit2:

As I've said in various posts, the built-in burner support and iApp burning support work just fine for me. (Of course I also do some of my burning through terminal as well.)

I just haven't found a need or reason to pay for Toast. Some people do need it and that's fine. I'd rather spend the money on something else I want or need.

Part of it is the bad experiences I had with Roxio Easy-CD Creator on Winblows. And part of it is, why add more software that may break when the OS is upgraded if I don't need it.

you said it: winblows... MacOS doesn't have the tendencies of 'breaking' stuff never had problems with toast did have a lot of problems with allmost everything on windows... thats one reason I switched...

The other point was Roxio...Roxio CD Creator and Roxio Toast. In other words, I no longer really trust their programming/programmers even tho' it is pro'ly different people who do the two products.

On the PB models that came out last year, using iLife 04:

1) You CAN burn DVD+R in the finder to burn data DVD's. Just put one in, drag whatever you want onto it, and then drag it to the trash to burn your DVD.

2) DVD+R is NOT supported by iLife 04, and iDVD will NOT recognize it.


To find out what media your DVD drive supports, just put in a blank and launch disk utility from your applications / utilities folder. Then, click on it in the menu on the left and look down at the bottom of the window. It will tell you exactly what it can do.

That's interesting, I didn't know that.

From Apple's website: http://www.apple.com/ilife/idvd/featureoverview.html It implies the hardware has the ability, but it must be enabled with software (iLife '05 in particular).

Many Macintosh systems can burn DVDs using DVD±R/RW media. That includes all currently-shipping Macs with a built-in SuperDrive. In fact, if you have a 17-inch or 20-inch iMac G5 with a built-in SuperDrive, updating to iLife ‘05 will give you the ability to use DVD±RW media, as well."

The PowerBooks shipping at the time this was originally posted were Rev C, which include mine and I believe eyelight's

None of this is to disregard James L's post regarding data DVD+R. If anything it goes to show how vague Apple is regarding the format.

I can burn DVD+R(W) just fine on my rev b. PM G5 dual 1.8Ghz with Toast 6. Although it's not officially supported by Apple, the superdrive is capable of recording DVD+RW just fine.

Interesting. I had previously thought that my PowerBook couldn't use anything other than DVD-R discs... someone gave me a pack of DVD+R's as a gift and it's good to know that I don't have to sell em on ebay.

Sorry to bump the topic, thought it would be better than starting a new one.My 05 Imac says i don't have a supported superdrive to burn DVDs i am not happy at all. Shouldn't it have come with one, its the imac that came out just before the isight imac. Grrr Any one got any suggestions on what i should do .Thanks a lot.
