Now, I've decided that I'm going to buy a Macbook, and am trading in my current 1.8Ghz G5 towards the cost of it. I've gotten a very good trade-in offer that I want to capitalise on it immediatley. The only problem is that I really want one with a superdrive, but can't afford the extra cost right now. So what I'm trying to find out is...

1) Would it be possible to upgrade a MacBook ComboDrive to a SuperDrive at a later time (either through standard practice or a 'hack'). I presume the answer is no.

2) If I were to buy an external DVD burner at a later date, what port in the MacBook would it connect to? USB? And would a be able to find a DVD burner that is quite easily portable?

Thanks,

SG

1. Yes, you could upgrade it. I've heard of companies that upgrade older laptops, too, so there shouldn't be any reason the MB cannot be upgraded in the same way.

2. Depends on what connectors the drive came with. Could be either Firewire or USB. Would you be able to find one? Sure. Just do Google it.

Excellent. Can anyone else confirm that I could upgrade my MacBook CD drive fairly hassle free?

You could simply use an external DVD burner, or build ur own (long story). When I had to burn a dvd, I jus took the data, put it on my ipod, put it on my comp, and used my fave DVD program DEEPBURNER.

Thanks for all the advice guys. So I can DEFINITELY install a new DVD burning drive in the MacBook? Would much rather do this than carry around an external one.

Amazon is offering the Macbook with a $100 rebate. That brings the White Macbook with Superdrive down to $1200 with free shipping and no sales tax.

That may make it easier to swallow. But then again, the Combo Macbook also gets the $100 rebate.

One more thing, keep in mind that the Superdrive in the MacBook is not a DL burner. Only single layer burning. Future 3rd party upgrades could potentially have DL burning.

That is the advantage of carrying arouind an external one. I don't carry mine around, becuase on the go, I don't see the need to burn DVDs. Cuz that would mean I have to carry around DVDs too. I already carry around my iPod with it, to use as external storage, cuz notebook memory is expensive.

But, I don't know anyone who uses the Dual Layer, I have yet to use it, and yet to get a disc that can use it, they are jus expensive. About 10bucks for 1 disc around here...i think.
