Hi,

If I try to burn the InstallESD.dmg with Disk Utility on a DVD with 4.7GB capacity, I get a similar error like this:
"There is not enough space on the DVD".

If I mount the InstallESD.dmg image it is 4.75GB big, which explains the error.

Does anybody know a solution for this?
Or should I burn the image on a DL DVD ?

Thanks

8GB USB stick is the easiest way to do it

Can I please ask a question. I got my macbook pro yesterday. I'm trying to burn the InstallESD.dmg for Lion 10.7.4 can someone tell me where exactly this is found on the machine? Or do I actually have to go buy it from the app store?

What I'm trying to do is....

I just got a new SSD and I don't have an enclosure for it, just trying to get an OS on it. I have 3 X blank DVDs at my disposal. Thanks.

By the way I am downloading Mountain Lion at the moment. If I just burn the InstallESD.dmg for this, can I install it on a blank SSD? Thanks again.

You can install the ML InstallESD.dmg onto the blank SSD if you choose. You will need an 8GB flash drive, though some have had success burning to a 4.7GB DVD.

You may also use the recovery partition to install Lion to the new SSD externally. When booting, hold option and select the recover partition. Use the Lion installer available there.

A third option would be to go through the the standard ML upgrade on your current system, then boot to the ML recovery partition by holding option at boot again. Then connect the external SSD, and use the installer to select the external drive.

I got the exact same error. The .dmg image is only 4.35 GB, yet it says it won't fit on a 4.7 GB DVD. In the mean time I just have a copy of the .dmg on my desktop til I can either get it on a disk or find a dirt cheap flash drive.

It won't fit on a single layer DVD. You need a double layer. The .dmg extracts when burning. I have installed ML on a double layer DVD and works perfectly.

Hi I would like to conclude by saying I went and bought a cheap 8 gig USB stick and managed to do it.

I bought a 16gb usb stick at frys for 10 dollars. So usb is much better. But how does that work. Just open the dmg and drag the files onto the usb??

Open Disk Utility, and choose the flash drive's partition. Select the Restore Tab. The source is the DMG, and the destination is the USB partition. :)

Same thing happened to me. DVD did not have sufficient space even though the Lion installer fit last year. Ended up going the lengthy route of upgrading Mountain Lion on top of Lion, rebooting in recovery mode, erasing the HD, and reinstalling clean.

Took a long time because I had 2 extra steps - the original upgrade install and then having to redownload the .dmg in recovery mode.

When the dust settled, the mission was accomplished though. Fresh clean install of Mountain Lion on my iMac.

I'll probably pick up a USB stick at some point though. Done with DVD's;)

The fastest method:
https://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?p=15068980#post15068980

This creates automatically a disk image with one Apple Partition Map (APM) and zero free space, a so called "optimized" disk image.

i just copied the file to the blank dvd and now its burning, what happened? i ruined my only dvd that i had left?

edit_ nah, it worked just fine !!
