Burning on MacBook Pro

I am trying to burn data files on my macbook pro with its standard Matsui drive, but the DVD discs i put in (+R and -R), after some thought are ejected. Am I using the wrong discs or do I need a firmware update or worse - a new drive?

I believe Apple supports -R. Most brands, if not all, should work.
