I have downloaded (legally) windows xp, which is an .exe file (which can be opened with stuffit) to my intel mac. I want to make this into an install disc, I have tried burning with toast and disc utility but neither disc is recognised when using boot camp. Any suggestions?

How about you point us to a place where you can legally download Windows and then you'll get some advice?

EDIT: Unlike the other poster, I'll assume you're on the up and up, and downloaded an EXE under some sort of an institutional site license. I believe the only other way to get XP this way is MDSN, but they provide ISO images.sgt bilko said:

You might be able to find the missing files that will enable you to make a bootable install disk at one of the sites below.

I downloaded from http://www.studentoptions.com It only gives very limited info. Any further info I have found related to installing on a PC, assuming you either have windows installed or want to install on all of computer, not through boot camp...
Look at the links I provided and see if they get you any further down the path. Don't hesitate to ask any further questions...

Oops...Do you have any access to a Windows computer? If you could burn the .exe file onto a computer, and get it to a Windows machine at a friend's house or a school library... I have a feeling that the .exe file is a program that will help you go through burning the upgrade disc which is contained in the application.
BTW, you do need a full version of Windows XP for Boot Camp last I heard... I can only find the upgrade version on the website you linked to.

Looking at that site, all I can see is the upgrade to Windows XP, which isn't going to work for bootcamp. Unlike Mac OS, Windows actually has upgrades, which require that you have a previous version of Windows. Boot camp only works with a full version (not an upgrade version) release of SP2 of Windows XP.
thanks, i'll look into all your tips.. I will take the disc round to a friends PC and see if that helps too. I know the site says its the upgrade edition but when I contacted them they assured me it was the stand alone version. The file I have downloaded seems to be the full version...
While this is true, for the unmodified install discs, you can modify an XPSP2 Upgrade disc to be usable with Boot Camp on a Mac. I should know, I've done it.baleensavage said:

I'm assuming that since "student" was in the URL of your download location, it's a free copy from a college/high school/university. If this is the case, chances are it's simply an .exe file that allows you to download the .iso installation file. I just had to go through it all today.
