Business card help, please

I finally gave up my pc for the wonderful world of my Mac Pro. One of the things I do miss, is my business card, which I created in Microsoft Publisher. I don't know how to re-create it on my Mac. I don't want to buy an entire software program, because I don't need to design anything. I'm happy with what I have. And I tried using a template in Microsoft Word, but it didn't seem to work properly. What software do the people who are offering up cards for critiques use?
Any suggestions?

Hi and welcome to MacRumors. As a professional designer I couldn't possibly recommend using Microsoft Word to create a business card.

*vomits a little*

However I will tell you there are a few free graphics packages out there, one I believe is 'Gimp'. I'm not sure of the link but someone will no doubt kindly post it for you if you are interested.

EDIT: Here you go I found it. Never used it so Im not sure what its like but its a step away from a business card in Word which your printer will thank me for.

Still wondering what others are using

Thanks for your reply. I agree. I'd rather not use anything microsoft if I don't have to. (small choking sound) I looked at GIMP and don't think it will help me. :eek: I'm still curious as to what software others on this forum are using to create business cards.

Most probably use Illustrator or Freehand. A few may use Quark and some possibly Photoshop but its not ideal. I personally use Macromedia Freehand. These are all paid for professional applications though and apart from a demo you won't get them for free.

You say 'you dont need to design anything' by that I take it your design has no graphics? Its just text right?

I guess you could create a new document in TextEdit (in your apps folder) and create a new document with the dimensions you want. Standard business cards are usually 85 x 55mm. Then create your card as you wish and then print the file as a PDF using OSXs built in PDF ability.

Go to 'Print' then the PDF button at the bottom left of the dialog box and choose 'Save as PDF'. That way you have a card done in a free application that you are familiar with and is in an industry standard format for printing.

Graphic Designers, close your eyes and move on to a different post.....since the OP says there's no need to design something new I just had to ask;

which template did you use? Did you use the Label Wizard that's part of MS Office (I'm guessing it's included with Word also if that's all you have) It has several business card templates
 
BusinessCard Composer by BeLight Software does really easy quick cards,
not free but real inexpensive.
and I think you can import a MS publisher file.

Thanks so much for the advice. I do have one graphic image, which is saved as clip art. I have the entire Adobe Creative Suite, but when I got the Mac Pro, upgraded only Photoshop to CS2. Can I install InDesign and/or Illustrator in the older versions from Creative Suite? This sounds like the best idea. I really appreciate the help. Katierose

Thanks, all. I installed both Illustrator and InDesign from my Creative Suite and got everything I need.
