If you need it now get it now, you can wait indefinitely for the next greatest thing to come out
^This... I mean M2 Pro/Max is going to have a performance bump like M2 did over M1 but I don't think it's going to be like M1 vs Intel. If your Mac is still chugging along okay then just wait. Maybe they will also have some other slight improvements on the new model.

If your Mac isn't working right then do you want to wait two months to find out. Keep in mind there's no guarantee Apple will release new models in October. Everyone thinks it will happen and it may but with the supply chain issues there are no guarantees.

suggest MacBook Air M2. Longer battery, less weight
Don't forget less power and more heat. Along with an inferior display and speaker system.

Someone who wants a 16" MBP is unlikely to be interested in a small fan less laptop.

I would have gone for the Air, if it had the same screen as the MBP.

So why not just get the base 14" MBP. Its the closest thing you are likely to see anytime soon.
If I was to get a MBP, I’d go for 16”.

I won’t buy one now though, as the M2 is surely to be incorporated soon.

I get that from the title of this thread but why would you get the 16" if what you really want is an MBA with a Mini LED & ProMotion display. The 14" is a bit heavier than the MBA and a bit thicker but the 16" is a lot heavier and a lot larger than the MBA and also a lot more expensive.

Perhaps relative cost? I don't know --- I prefer larger screens, but also would have gone with the MBA if it had the XDR screen. I jumped on a 14" MBP, though.

Well if you want 16gb of RAM and a 512gb SSD the cost of the base 14" is about the same as the MBA. Because 16/512 is the base spec of the 14" you can find them discounted to as little as $1700. However, a 16/512 MBA has to be ordered from Apple at the full Apple price which is $1600 or $1700 depending on the GPU you want.

I prefer larger screens, that’s why I’d go for the 16” MBP.

But I’d sacrifice screen real estate for the new MBA design.

If you need it now, but it now. BUT: If I didn't need it now, I'd wait—the student discount will still be there on the M2 MBP's, and you'll be getting a better machine. Plus, as MacRumors itself cautions in their buying advice, the M1 MBP's are approaching the end of their cycle.

No one knows when the M2 MBP's will be released. If they use the current 5 nm process, they could probably do it in October/November. But if they wait to put them on the 3 nm process, you'll probably have to wait until the first half of 2023.

What does it mean, "the end of their cycle"?

When MacRumors cautions that 'the M1 MBP's are approaching the end of their cycle', it means we're approaching the time when they will be replaced by a updated version.

Everyone is going to tell you to get the M1 MacBook Pro 14”.

I won’t insult your intelligence since very clearly you are considering all options already and seem to prefer the 16” anyway.

So get a $150 card or get the latest MacBook Pro. The way I see it is the M1 was a great chip and it still is. But with all things tech it will be a three year old design the M1 Pro/Max is based on. While the M2 is a newer chip design with better gpu and better efficiency cores. The sigle core and multi core score will be higher as well. All decent upgrades in my opinion.

If you are going to spend a lot of money and keep the device a few years then I would suggest if you can afford it, get the newer model. No one knows what improvements the M2 MBP’s will have beside the chip. Might just be a new chip and that is it and it might be more. No one knows for sure.

The $150 gift card would be nice and the base price of the 16” from Apple has been reduced in price so it is certainly a good deal.

I think there are three considerations.

What is your budget?

What will you be doing with the MBP?

How would you benefit from the newer device and would it justify the extra cost of the newer model.

And probably a fourth question is would you regret getting the older machine?

Answer those questions for yourself and you will have your answer.

No amount of people going back and forth on why you should buy this or that will be able to answer those questions and ultimately you are the one buying the device and having to live with it. I think the most important question is how you will use it honestly.

The one benefit which in my opinion would be a big one is possibly better battery life with the newer efficiency cores. If you get more power and better battery life that might be enough of a reason to spend more.
