My contract for the iPhone 3G ends in September, but I am eligible to upgrade for $199 to the 3GS at the end of February. I just broke the screen on my phone which is a little unappealing aesthetically but it works fine. Should I re-sign my agreement and get the 3GS or wait for a possible new product come this summer? What would you do?

I'm waiting - I got a 3G on launch day so I'm almost out of the 18 month contract. I'm holding onto it until the next version iPhone comes along. :)

IMO, unless there is something you absolutely, positively, can't live without (or with, in the case of your cracked screen) on the 3GS, hold out for the summer, when Apple seems to like refreshing the iPhone.

Summer 2007: start selling original iPhone
Summer 2008: update phone to 3G, add GPS, more memory, etc.
Summer 2009: Update to 3GS: add voice recognition, compass, better camera, etc.
Summer 2010: Update(?) to ???: Who knows what they'll add/change/improve this time!

I got a 3G about a month after they started selling it (July 2008). I think I'm eligible for a 3GS now. There are a couple things I'd like that the 3GS has that the 3G doesn't (voice recognition & compass come to mind...), but I figure since I waited until the 3G came out (never owned an iPhone "Classic"), and suffered with "old school" phones that year, I can live with the second-best phone there is (the 3GS being the best, of course!).

Besides, when they do update the iPhone next, wouldn't you rather be able to grab one straight away instead of waiting another year or more? I know I would!

Same here, I have a feeling next iPhone will be big. Wait.

Wirelessly posted (IPhone: Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU iPhone OS 3_1_2 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/528.18 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/4.0 Mobile/7D11 Safari/528.16)

Whatever is on the horizon for this summer, I can't imagine it to be mindblowing. I figure they wotnt roll out the next generation iPhones until the American networks (not to mention the rest of the world) can support 4g, which likely won't be until 2011. If there is going to be an iPhone update at all, I would guess it's going to be something like the 3gX... More powerful camera, larger HD, iPhone 4.0 firmware... You get the picture. This year is going to be all about the tablet.

I'd get the 3GS cuz you have a cracked screen. The last thing you want to do is slice your finger or your face on the broken glass.

cracked screen

Or you could just go to a cell phone repair shop and get it fixed for the time being. There's a place here locally and they charge 70.00 and it only takes 20 minutes. ;)

I got my phone in August, and looking to upgrade myself. I have the same question, as my 3G works fine and still looks new.

My contract will be expiring in Feb spoke to Carphone Warehouse and they said I could go on the 02 simplicity pack for £15 but then I would have no access to 3G or the web.

He told me to upgrade to 3GS sell my 3G and if/when the new iPhone comes out buy it on PAYG and sell the 3GS to finance it and use the contract sim in the new iPhone.

If I keep my current contract on a rolling basis I would basically be paying £35 for the tariff with no real benefit, this way I get the benefit of the 3GS.

What do you guys/gals think?

I'm pretty sure there's an iPhone simplicity tariffavailable from what I've read on here, you do get Visual Voicemail and web access for around 20 per month. Thats what I intend to switch to in 3 weeks time then I'll hang tight and see what happens in June. I still have no complaints with my 3G so happy to wait a few months.

Plenty of friends have the 3GS and I just don't feel its a big enough step up to miss out on potentially 2 revisions as I'll be tied to a 2 yr contract as opposed to the 18 month I took out on the 3G

The iPhone 3GS is a amazing device. but since you have a 3G , its not that much different. I couldnt wait if i were you, but you're supposed to wait :p.
