Ok my ipod photo recently crapped out on me. So now all i am left with is my shuffle and phone for listening pleasure. I really like the white ipod video but don't want to buy so late in the products cycle. Though i miss having my entire collection of music with me at work . BAH! i need some of your opinions on this matter should i wait or just get now? I am so confused...

What's wrong with the photo ? Battery - Hard Drive or other ?

the general thought process here (on MR) is as follows:
if you want a new iPod, then go ahead and buy it. if you can stand to wait for a product that has not even been announced (a 6G iPod) then go ahead and wait. it all comes down to what benefit you get out of your purchase.

others may suggest something similar to the following:
if you want to carry your entire music collection around, by a refurb or eBay iPod for cheap and then when the new ones come out, you can buy one of them.

basically, you need to decide whether you can wait for the next new iPod or if having the current model will suit your needs. you can always sell the 5G model if/when the 6G comes out or you can always do without the 6G as the 5Gs are very nice and seem to suit your needs presently. there are many possibilities - you just need to choose one.

whatever you choose, enjoy!

I recently ran out of room on my 4G 40GB, my trusty companion. so i figured. why wait? i found a 60GB video in white on here for $278, that is a heck of a deal in my eyes, and to my wallet ;)

i didn't want to wait for some new ipod that may come out soon. i liked what the video had to offer, so i bought one.

if a video ipod 5G will suit your needs presently, then why wait? so what if there is a new one coming, we know nothing about it.

but as always, you could sell it if the 6G turns out to suit your needs better.

The click wheel is broke. Maybe i could sell it here under the market place. The hard drive is fine and it still has the box and everything if intrested please PM me. 30 gig ipod photo.

If I was in your position I'd buy a new 5G. There's nothing to beat having your entire collection with you at all times, and though no-one can be sure, there's really little evidence to suggest a new iPod before Autumn.

just to add to my previous comment.

i am very very happy with my 5G 60GB. i can now finally take my some-odd 7000+ songs with me anywhere, and its thinner than my 40GB!

after calibrating the battery, i am able to get just over 19 hours on a full charge. that is just phenomenal. i don't see any downside to you getting a 5G, and if you can get one used, heck, its practically a steal.

just wanted to thank you guys for all your opinions and input on this matter. I'll let you know in like a day what i decided to do. Thanks again fellas.

I'd wait. I can feel a new and improved iPod coming in my bones.

<pedant>If it is improved it was there before - if it is new then it wasn't. By definition "new" and "improved" are mutually exclusive </pedant>

But I agree - it would be worth waiting. fill the shuffle and the phone. Between them you will have enough music to survive for a while (unless you get one really cheap.

Well when I bought my MacBook, I thought the same thing about the iPod, what if they make a revision soon?

The reason why I didnt hold out because it is still an upgrade from my former 4G iPod. Even if they release something cooler and newer, you are still getting something better you had before. If you need it, get it, if you dont, you can wait it out. Whatever way you go, you will still be happy that you got a new iPod

I say just grab the 5G iPod Video. Doubt there will be revisions out in the next few months (hopefully an aluminum nano comes out though!) for the iPod Video. Also, checkout buy.com. They have great deals on iPods there! I think i saw one for 335 for the 60gb.

Get a refurb 4G. Or if you can, wait for WWDC. I had my iPod 4G stolen and opted to get a refurb mini to tide me over til WWDC at least.

i'd say that since it looks as though music is your main priority, then go for the 5G iPod, since the "true video" capabilities probably wouldn't be your main use, anyway. also, as many have pointed out, it may be many months before we see the 6G iPod (and for me, that's waaaay too long without my music! heh).

5th gens arent even a year old, thus your warrenty is still intact no? If so, just send it back. If not, then I would wait. WWDC is comeing up, and then something else afterthat in september. And the holiday Quarter is comeing up, so I imagein a new iPod by November. There is no real "proof" but it would be logical for apple to annouce it before christmas.

Well i have to say i did it. I got a big daddy ipod (the 60 gig video version white). I am absolutely amazed with how bright the screen is and how well it displays video. The extra room is also a very nice feature as well and hey if they do decide to update there ipod line around the holidays there always Santa to ask :p
