Hi,
a family member overseas would like an iphone, i'm thinking about picking one up for him, i'll just cancel the at&t contract after 30days and keep the phone. but i'd need to jailbreak it for him, he's in the uae, would this be possible? can the current iphone 3g software be unlocked, or just the prior one, i see on the dev site it says firmware 2.2 and baseband 02.28.00., is that current one the new phones come with?

thanks.

Yes that would be fine. The iPhone you buy will either come with 2.2 or quite possibly an earlier one depending on when it was made.

Currently ALL iPhones 1st gen and 3G can be jailbroken and unlocked.
