Buy.com USB Charger Will Not Charge 3Gs

I just bought a cheap USB charger from buy.com but when I plug it into my phone it tells me that it is not a supported accesory or something along those lines. It will work as a data cable but will not charge my phone.

Does anyone know what's going on? I read that some old firewire based charges wont work but this is just a USB cable.

A little bit of clearification. It works on my Wife's 3G but not my 3GS. Has anyone else had problems with accessories for the 3G working with the 3GS?
