I have been looking to purchase a MacBook Pro since the Santa Rosa refresh having been a PC user all my life. Unfortuneatley I have not managed to save enough money for the 2.4GHX 15" and would like a Laptop before I return to University in the Beginning of October.

My sister recently purchased a Base model MacBook and it seems to be a splendid machine that would tide me over till the next MacBook Pro refresh.

I am wondering how much money I would likely be able to recieve for selling the base model Macbook at that time? I do a lot of graphic and web design in my spare time so the extra screen size and dedicated graphics would be important to me.

Many thanks.

I think 1k is a little high. Maybe more like $700-$800 but I am sure you could always sell for more on ebay.

Thanks for the input guys. I guess since the switch to Intel, they are not as exclusive machines as they once were?

Looks like i'll have to plump for a dirt cheap Windows machine till next year

you could get a macbook/ibook off ebay

I second this. A Powerbook G4 might be a good way to hold yourself over for a few more months. Plus, you probably wouldn't lose as much over the course of three or four months as you would buying a new macbook.

Remember the student discount, however. You are entitled to purchase one machine per year (read the fine print whether that is a calendar or a school year) at $100 - $200 off depending on model. If you do so before Sept 17 you also get a free 2nd generation iPod Nano.

Im not sure I'm entitled to the student discount. My sister has already used the HE discount for her MacBook (although it was sent to a different address).

I cant get the nano as I'm a Brit and the deal doesnt seem to run over here!

I've been scouring ebay for a while now, seems almost as expensive as new. A few Powerbooks look interesting though.

Keep your eyes open on the Apple outlet, then resell it later on. I was very happy to find a MBP for $500 less than retail, but they disappear quickly.

Always look for a good deal on here. I was trying to sell a nice ibook for 400 bucks. Always some great deals on here.

Buy refurbished, sell it on ebay and youre guaranteed to make a profit. People on ebay are idiots about macs, theyll pay anything. Or buy new with a student discount and make a profit. Either way you can easily sell a used mac for around the same price as what it costs new even if theres an upgraded model out, some idiots will even pay more for a used last-gen mac than what a new mac costs, to some freaks it must be like buying used panties.

whatever, you can still see ibooks going for 700 or so on ebay...

Thats because of the G4...I could have sold my iBook G4 (1.42GHz) and 1.5GB RAM and AppleCare easily for $700-800. For the MacBook..keep it an AMAZING CONDITION. I plan on doing the same thing as you but I would keep is clean and such. Keep the box and everything, don't throw it away. I would say when you sell for your base..about $700-800. For the 2.16GHZ..I would say $1000

lol. but couldn't agree more.

in your case though, i would buy a used PC laptop off of e-bay for very little money. you can get great deals on models only a year or so old. though it would be even better if you could save the money and hold off on buying anything. i know that's hard.
