I've been waiting paitently to purchase an iMac 27' computer with upgraded RAM, HD, software and other bells andwhistles. My budget is to spend $2,500 - and even this is expensive. However, I do want to move into the OSX and away from Windows.

I have been very cautious in whehter this investment is worth it due to the numerous complaints ranging from the yellow tinted sceens, grey bars, buzzing screeens, scratched DVDs, and many other more trival issues. Keep it mind, apples to apples with a comparable PC will run a lot less. I suspect that Apple Care is really an insurance pool that consumers invariably subscribe to based upon tribal knowedlge of Apples routninely needed repair beyond their limited 1 year warranty. Componnets suchs as logic boards and other components fail a lot soner than those found in competitors machines. I surmisethat Apple uses cheap parts and hikes up their prices with cheap components. when there IS a failure or warranty claim, it comes out of a win-win insurance pool and higher-priced retail CPUs. Actuaries have stuff like this figured out. Planned obsolescene, if you will. Its a business model.

Anyway, Im still clining on to my PC but its showing its age.

Is it wise to wait until early Spring for the 2011 iMac, or will there be very minor changes not worth waiting for. What differences or chaneges do you expect Apple to to improve upon with this early 2011 iMac refresh. Is it an entirely new design or just a minor refresh. To be honest, the components are not exactly cutting-edge as is, so I would hope for substantive improvements in this area. Most concerning though, is this YELLOW TINT COLOR BLEMISH. - Will this be fixed or solved by 2011 or are we looking at antoher flawed iMac generation.

Please HELP.

I really really want to buy this computer, but am concerned about the many hundreds of thousands of complaints for the yellow tint issue. It worries methat on the Apple forum, Apple ha actively deleted posts which raise complaints about the extent of the yellowing problem. Is Apple completely ignoring this problem or are they just not addressing it in lieu of mobile projects which is currently the big thing.

APPLE and STEVE JOBS are you LISTENING to your CUSTOMERS??!?!

Is it safe to buy an iMac without yellow screens with buzzing sounds from dimming the brightness, permanently scratching DVDs and grey bars.

****APPLE IS LOSING A LOT OF REVNUE BY NOT ADDRESSING THIS YELLOW SCREEN ISSUES ASAP. *****

Seems they no longer care about the loyal Mac users of years who built their reputation.

****PLEASE JUST FIX THIS iMAC or find a NEW SUPPPLIER who cabn ASSEMBLE them PROPERLY.****

Thanks for listening and comisserating with my strong desire to give $2.5K to a company with 51 Billlion in CASH reserves. Im just severely disappointed that they are more concerned with taking boatloads of money for what appears to be declining quality for a product which is no longer a permium system.

Shame on you Apple and Steve Jobs. Short term profits will only get you so far before you alienate customers with truly practical applicational needs and not routine email and internent chatter which you could easily be performed on a a rainbow colored screen. For those who rely on a screen with consistent color gradients, this iMac is absolutely unacceptable.

"hundred of thousands" of complaints... And your data source is?

Get a grip. If you get a imac with yellow tint return it.

man, what a rant... chill out! you'll get a heart attack! looks like you really got up on the wrong side of the bet this morning.... :D

Anyway, if your primary concern is some kind of defect on a new "investment", don't buy a computer! it's a terrible way to invest your hard earned money. As whether to buy now or wait, the advice is classic, so I don't see the point in repeating it... but I can assure you that the upcoming models - whenever they come - will also be subject to problems. All products are, so don't pin your hopes on that either.

Get a grip. If you get a imac with yellow tint return it.

Take this good advice. Priceless.

Happy new year!

Don't worry about the yellow. I had a 2009 iMac and it had no yellow problem at all. If you have any problems with a new one you can just get it repaired or replaced like most things we buy.

It will likely be about 3 months before a new iMac will be out. If you can wait, wait. If you need one sooner and want to hedge your bets on value then pick up a refurb. A refurb is less likely to have nay problems at all and costs less with a same as new warranty. My 27" iMac was a refurb and it looked brand new

I just took delivery of a new 27" iMac priced well on Apple's refurb. store.
No yellow-tinted screen (refurbished may be the way to go if you want to ensure a human has actually looked at the machine and verified it's ready for resale).

There are some decent deals there now (and probably will be much better selection in the next month as people exchange or return their Xmas gifts).

I don't bother with AppleCare--most credit cards double Apple's 1 yr. warranty, and any issue that doesn't manifest within 2 years is extremely rare).

Aaaaaand here I was expecting another Sandy Bridge post. Does it suck that they have this yellow tinting chance? Yes. Apple has become a huge company and this is one of the side-affects. Quality control can sometimes be hard to control.

It sounds like you've made your decision and don't need us. My advice, if your gonina spend $2500 and are wanting to use windoze software go to a company like ibuypower.com, or if your technical enough, build your own machine. The machine listen in my sig, which is more of Mac pro power (AMD Phenom II is comparable to the fastest i7s of that generation, except for the extreme edition, plus the fastest GPU you can get on a mac pro), and I built it for about $1200. I still love macs, but if I hated iMacs as much as you did, and only wanted to run windows, I'd be looking at something different!

As far as your actual question, come 2011 there will be a handful of duds, each of which will be painlessly remedied by apple, but will be blown out of proportion and called a "major problem". Nobody has ever succeeded at flawless quality control and manufacturing, I bought a Mac once that came out of the box with a dud power supply, didn't even fire up. So guess what? I took it back, less than a minute later I was walking out the door with another one, no problems. What I didn't do was post on online forums "EVERY SIGNLE SOLITARY APPLE PRODUCT HAS A BAD POWER SUPPLY DON'T BUY IT". Welcome to life.

Just remember you're actually talking about an iMac, the iMac is an ALL IN ONE system and is not in direct competition with your usual Windows desk top, for that you'll want the Mac Pro.
The iMac is in a whole league of its own, there's nothing else out there to match it, have seen some Windows based machines but their specifications are substandard to the iMac and as for looks, well they're certainly in need of some princess to come along and give them a kiss as they're pug ugly.

The iMac is a piece of art and is always a focal point in any room.

And no I don't own an iMac, not yet, like you I'm waiting till the next upgrade, have been saving for a couple of years now to by one and as each day passes the excitement mounts, I to have been reading the posts here for a while and read some horror stories, but I also know that people tend to write when things go wrong more than they do when everything goes right, its human nature to complain and these forums are perfect for it.

So think real hard about what you really want, after all, an iMac is not just for Christmas, it's for life.... ;)

1st tip: Steve Jobs doesn't read these forums lol. These forums are pretty much Steve's enemy.

2nd tip: Sounds like you hate the iMac, stick with windows

3rd tip: Don't come back

I think you'll enjoy it, but the bottom line of those horror stories: Apple fixes it. Your GONNA get a broken one every now and again, I've gotten bad Macs, and bad PC's, and I don't know if I have every met someone who has never had a bad experience with a purchase, but if you tell Apple about it they will make it right. No they won't do a massive recall on all of the perfectly-fine iMacs on the market like some journalists thought they should, nor will they issue some sort of public apology like they ran over a kitten or something, but if you tell them YOUR iMac isn't working right, they will fix YOUR iMac. That idea in itself, and in practice, makes the product flawless and fail-proof.

Apples do have their issues. But so do other companies' computers. I don't see the tech news site picking on this issue, so I don't think it is really as bad as forums make it seem (I guess only Apple truly knows, though).

Anyway, Apple seems like they are willing to replace the iMac if the screen is an issue, so if this is the only thing holding you back, you might as well get it. After all, how will you know the next iMac completely eliminates the issue? You'd probably have to wait a few months for reports from other purchasers to come in to have a decent idea.

the yellow tint is not a fault ist's just a unwanted feature , if a display is that big apple thought about people sitting away from the screen in a safe distance , and yellow glasses for example are good if the visibility in the room gets bad , so apple just tinted the screen yellow , so if you got fog in your room it will not effect visibility

sorry but just return the yellow tint iMac if you get one ...thats why apple has a return policy and warranty and if the yellow appears in the future apple care
and after apple care ends you will buy a new one anyway

It is actually a very small percentage of users who have "yellow tint" or other problems with the iMac. This forum is a magnet for YELLOW TINT threads or MY MAC IS BROKEN threads. Just the nature of a tech forum.

My 21.5" mid-2010 still hasn't developed this yellow tint thing since I bought it the week they came out. It doesn't squeak (or whatever noise they're supposed to make) either.

After reading these forums I feel like the luckiest man in the world

Spend your money on a windows machine and please don't join the Mac community. We like good neighbors.

So, what's your party line for those who reported 4th - 5th - 6th faulty iMacs in a row and no "painless remedy by apple" to speak of?

I have been in the market for a gaming laptop for 5 years :D
I use 'Notebook reviews' forum to find out infos on current and upcoming laptops.
Every single laptop on the market has good and bad reviews on it. It doesn't matter if it's an AW , Sony, HP , Dell etc..... you find something wrong with it.
If you are in the market for something flawless with no complaints or bad reviews on it ....good luck. And if you do find it let me know about it and I will go buy it asap.
I bought my iMac last night and I also have a 2009 Mac Pro wich I purchased 4 months before the 2010 model came out. I don't regret it for one day. For my needs the 2009 Mac Pro is more then enough.
No one knows 100% when the new iMac is coming out. It could be in 2 months , maybe 4 months , who knows?
If you need it and want the iMac now go for it IMHO you will be satisfied.
When I first started up my imac last night I noticed that the colours are a bit washed out and that is not the monitor fault is just poorly calibrated from the factory.
My only complaint with the iMac is that it gets bloody hot on the top left corner. But after reading few reviews online I found out that it's because the case is doing it's job by absorbing the heat. I still have not tested the temps but will do that later on tonight.
Other then that I am satisfied with this purchase and every other Apple product I have bought so far.
I am not an apple fanboy by the way. I also use a PC for gaming, the Mac Pro for music and the iMac I bought strictly for web surfing , you tube videos , watching dvd's and movies online and to play starcraft 2 and diablo 3 when it comes out :D
