I've been thinking of getting MacPro for a long time now, just been saving and waiting.. Now I think I am gonna go for one. Should I pick one up now, or do you all think there will be a major update soon? Maybe new body? New cinema displays? Anyone have any input?

Wait for two years!... If you need one get one now, if you don't wait. I waited until I heard that only one underfed 8 core machine came out and I bought a core 2 duo 2.66. I will buy when a real 8 core comes out!

I went and picked up one tonight, haven't put it up yet though. I'm waiting on a refurn 23" ACD... Was this a good choice, I wonder now. Should I have waited for WWDC... I hope I don't regret getting it in a month...

It's simply a great computer. There isn't much not to like, and there is plenty to love. Sure Apple may come out with some changes or other BTO options, or tweaks to various components... but i doubt anything will be a substantial break from the current line up. All current MP's will be very powerful computers for the next 5 years. If something else does come along that you 'have to have', then you can always sell what you got and upgrade. So no reason to be sad! Enjoy it now, rather than agonizing over finding 'just the right time'.

Congrats on your purchase (i pick up mine tomorrow!)... Let us know how it goes for you with your usage patterns.

Other than a faster quad core there would be no sense to update hte Mac Pro until at least 4Q07, so for Apple about 1Q08 at MacWorld San Fran.

There isn't any new processor/tech coming out of Intel until then. They've published the rest of this years roadmap (See This Article for details)

Harpertown is the follow on for the 5100/5300 family of chips, which the Mac Pro uses.

Before then it'd be rather expensive to update when it's really not needed.

My $0.02, I don't work for apple, just my thoughts.

Get the thing. I bought a dual core PM G5 8 months before the MPs came out. Do I regret it? Nope. It's great and I needed it. I'll use it for a server when it's no longer useful as my main machine.

Here's the thing- it's a Mac, and you'll be buying the best of them. It's going to serve you well for years. Even if you wait til WWDC, get one then. Mac towers are beasts, you won't regret it either way.

I went through all the same thoughts and decided to get the current 2.66 anyway.

Even with the stock 1GB memory it is screamingly fast but struggles when you load it - iPhoto for instance and iWeb send the page-outs through the roof. Fortunately I have 4GB of OWC RAM waiting for me at the post-office to collect today and plug in tonight, everyone reports that this makes an amazing difference, I'll let you know...

Interstingly, I installed XP on Boot Camp and a load of my old Windows games - Doom 3, UT2004 etc. and booting into Windows these games run really very well at decent resolutions on the stock 7300 card so I'm pleéased I didn't fork-out for the ATI...

Yeah, they're incredible machines, so noone should regret their purchase...

...but if you are waiting, it's definately worth waiting for the 22nm process, coming 2011.

Rich.

It is a real computer. Even the fastest Personal Computer you can buy.

just order one and sell it on the bay or to a friend when the new ones come out if they even come out with new ones at WWDC
