I am curious if it is possible to buy a macbook pro online and then if I need to return it for any reason (new model comes out in the next few days) I could return it to a physical store and get the new version.

A little background info: My new job is going to buy me a laptop. However, the fiscal year is ending this week and they need to buy it before Wednesday. Say they do order the MBP for me, and a week later an upgrade comes out. Is there any way I can walk into an Apple store and just trade the old version for the new one provided I haven't opened the box?

I guess another problem might be because I wasn't the one who bought it (my company did), so I don't know how that might work. Any pieces of helpful info would be appreciated.

Thanks!

Best bet would call your Apple store and speak with the manager. Most, most keyword, people that work at Apple Stores don't know there ass from a whole in the ground.

Only if it's the stock configuration. They won't take a BTO back.

My recollection of this (I returned a G4 Mac mini which I bought about two days before the Intel Mac minis were released) is that the online Apple Store operates COMPLETELY independently of the retail stores... which means you'll need to handle any exchanges by shipping the "old" computer back.

If the computer must be bought this week, buy it from an Apple Store retail location... and don't open it until you see what (if anything) new is released a week from tomorrow. (If you open it, any exchange is going to involve a 10% restocking fee.)

Thanks for the info. It's good to know that the online store is totally independent. I'll see if I can't get it from a retail store.

Of course I'll be getting the Federal discount too, so I'm sure that will complicate things...

from my experience, recently i bought an iMac20" (stock configuration) online andi called apple about returning at an apple store, they said, i cant. i returned thru UPS but i have to pay restocking fee. consumers have 14 days to reurn.

I ordered an iPod nano online right after it was introduced, but I couldn't stand waiting 3 days for it to be delivered so I bought one at the Apple Store and they allowed me to return the online nano as long as it wasn't open and BTO.

i think its such trash that apple refuses to take back a BTO system. other places do it.
