iPod Buy/Rent HD movies to play on HDTV

Hello.
I want to start buying HD movies from iTunes to play on my HDTV by connecting it to my macbook via mini-dvi/HDMI.
But i read some place that i can only rent and buy HD via Apple TV! is that true?

Will i get full resolution when doing this if it works?

you can buy hd from itunes or apple tv, which ever you prefer

hd on itunes is 720p
