Hi, I'm guite of thorn.

I have been using Mac Pro's.
1.1 - 1.2, 3.1, The Trashcan.
I love the trashcan. But it is getting older, single core speed is not grate.
My 2015 Air beats is. But it worthless anyway because of the 8 gig ram.
My Mac Pro 3.1 with 64gig ram just kills it.

I was never a big fan of imac.
But the i9, some graphic cards.
You can add up to 128 ram.
And as far as I know. I need at least 64. ( after FX, I work with medium format cameras ( uge file size, and with 64gb of ram I can work at 15 or mor at the same time ( a neccacity to match te colors and vibes correct ).

Windows is a plus 2. I will get a free pro licence, because they want to make me lurn it.

New Imacs looks quite compelling, anny downsides, asfar from that it will be all siliicon over 2 years.

Another thing is music. I use logic and logic will do just fine. Also bought fruity loop for things logic can"t do.
I'ts all the other software /compatibilty like for my Oberheim Matrix 1000 to design noises.

It's a bit, would I buy an Imac i9. ( the only fear, they will ditch intel and software as they did with G4 and G5 mavs )

Kind regards

Yeah I thought so.

I have a lot of "interfaces" that might not work on M1.
As do the do the programs, something like an editor to synthesize new sounds on an Oberherheim Matrix. I just wont asume that I Mac will run for 10 years.
( or not the software, some expensive expensive hardware ( I run my pro tools and fire wire stuf on my mac pro 1.1 and 2.1, as do the epson printers ... ). But do remember Apple has some habbits like cutting real fast on some things, I have my 6.1 running on a high Sierra version still supporting external graphic cards witch was cut in the later versions.

Anyway thanks.

For the most part I'm still running on El Cap.
But Also High Sierra, Mojave ... I have 6 TB bootdrives.

I will probably switch to M1 when everyting is in order.

Kind Regards.

Watched some vids

The newest I7 doesn't seem to be that mush slower.
And probalbly runs a litte cooler?

I9 and 5700 or I7 and 5700 XT. ( computer I will buy in 5 - 6 years probably crush them both
and they will be equally slow )

In computers there is mostly, a sweetswpot.
Then you pay a lot, for not that much speedgain.

I also don't like a lot of noise, from the pc. My trashcans are silence.
New Mac Pro is out out my budget ... they used to be with trashcans and stuff ...

If you don't need a lot of graphic rendering power, then selecting middle level hardware will help with noise reduction.
For example, with still 2D graphic and music aps openned at the same time, you need a lot of RAM, but not much of CPU power or GPU power.
An Intel core i5 iMac with 5300XT is probably enough. Save your budget for RAM upgrade + SSD capacity is more efficent (higher price per performance ratio)

Thx for your input.
But I do some rendering.
I would not even mind quda. But It's not an option anymore.
My cheesgraters nvidea. q cores.
I have no music apps at the same time, or web.
Workcomputer has no internet. It's 18 to ... 24h work ...
Atm. I Cant afford anything exensive. Thrashcan was 10.000 or so.
Didn't want to play I'm a professional card ... as far as I have 64gig ram and 2 screens
I'll survive :)

Just trashcan is almost 10 years old.

Seeing this as a midstop beetween more powerfull sillicon macs.
Also builden a xeon PC. But never connected to pc, in workflow or something :)
And they have Imac at the other builings I work, and they are ok, but I don't toture them.
Do you know how slow omplex afer fx render and stuff. I work with multiple thrashcans
if one is rendering. Start desiging thing to import into the project on another one ...
an i5 won't do it. I have 12 macs ... and 7 pc's ...

I will upgrade the ram to 64 or 128, and have pci express boxes with 8 terrabytes into samsung blades. :) no offence. I spend a fortune on this. And 40 Terrabyte on the other side of the house the back up finished projects.

But thanks for the help anyway. I just don't know about Imacs. :)

( But still thinking go i7 ... I want to test that M1 stuff, but it is to fresh )

Kinds Regards.

Those who do music production should be certain that both their software AND their hardware will work with the m1 Macs before getting into "Apple Silicon".

The only component that may be "upgradeable" on the 2020 iMacs is the RAM (and that's on the 27" model only).
Can't answer as to the CPU/GPU.

I wouldn't be surprised if the RAM, too, is soldered into the upcoming m-series iMacs.

Also take note of today's MR front page article about Rosetta2 being disabled in certain countries outside of the USA. Can be read here:

This could have significant impact on music producers.
