hey, should I buy it new or old apple tv? I will mostly rent movies and TV series and a look at youtube. I see the old apple tv has a hard drive. and it could be nice to have if you will take with apple tv and watch the rented movie with friends. but after reading this page: http://discussions.info.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=12208810 I am a little worried. tv series will not be available at the old apple tv?

what should I buy?

the new rates for rental of movies and series apply the old apple tv?

pleas help me!

If you want to rent tv shows you need the new appletv.

If you need to keep media on your appletv (as opposed to stream from PC) you need the old appletv.

IMO you don't need to keep media on your appletv so I am getting the new appletv and selling my old crystal HD appletv on ebay to fund it.

ok thanx. then i am buying the new one i think. i hope it will work here in norway. (no ip block):p

friends of mine going to london and they can buy one for me. they will struggle to get hold of one or is it not that long line?

ok, thanx!:) do you think it is memory on the apple tv? becuse it must buffer? i dont have the best internet connection

If you are specifically looking to rent you will have to wait until rentals are available in your area or try another method like an American VPN. If you are already concerned about the speed of your connection this would not sound like a good idea.

i have an american itunes account. i can rent a movie or tv show on my mac. and people use the old apple tv to rent movies. so the big question is: does the new apple tv have an IP block? the old one dosent!

Fair enough- sounds like it won't take you long to try a tv show rental out from iTunes. I understand they are already available from within iTunes. Can't imagine there would be any difference.

Figured it was better to not start a new thread on the same thing...

I had a similar question about the Apple TV. I was entirely thrilled about the new Apple TV when it was announced, but after a bit of research, the original one may be the one I want after all.

So the new one does rentals and YouTube and Netflix and all that stuff. I don't use Netflix, YouTube could be cool now and then given I only have 2 G4s, and I certainly won't be renting, because I just use the local RedBox. I DO however love the AirPlay that they demoed on the iPad, streaming to the Apple TV seamlessly. I DON'T want to keep my Windows computer on to stream everything all the time, though.

My point, finally: The new Apple TV isn't getting updated again, right? It's cut off? So does that mean no AirPlay? I would love the local storage of a 160gb drive, as I'll probably just put movies on it, but what else would I be missing? What else would I gain from the old model, besides a little heat and component or hdmi video?

I have an Airport Extreme and a USB hub attached that I have 4 flash drives on. 16gb flash drives x4 would give me 64gb of space on my Airport Extreme, so in theory, I could just get a video out cable from my iMac, which is right next to my TV, and stream that way. Would that be a better / cheaper option?
