I just purchased a new Mac Mini for my home theater setup and I get home and realize that the event is tomorrow and perhaps a revision to the Apple TV will be released.

Should I just open the Mac Mini or wait until tomorrow to see what happens? My needs are to play mostly .MKV files and of course have the extra bells and whistles (photos, music, etc...). The issue of course is, the mini costs a lot more than an Apple TV would AND this isn't for personal computing, but more so for a home theater setup.

So which would I probably better off with? I'd hate to go the expensive route for no reason.

You should Open your Mini.
First of all, the new Apple TV will not have storage in it. It will be all stream, either from internet or for another mac through wi-fi. So, if you want to keep your movies or .mkv files, get the mini. Or even a better choice, get the mini AND the new ATV, so you can have the mini for personal computing and still get the benefits from your Appletv+mac mini as a midia center.
