Buying 2nd hand - how to check works with my carrier

Am thinking on swopping my 6 for a used 6 plus which is supposedly unlocked
Is there a quick way to check it will work with my carrier's sim ie can I just put my sim in it to try it quickly initially without doing all the erasing/ restoring etc that would need to be done if I do the deal ?

Yeah, you should simply be able to put the SIM in and try it out.
