Buying a Mac Pro and bring it home to Sweden

Hi

I'm thinking of buying a Mac Pro in the US, during my visit there.
Why ? Its a lot cheaper than Sweden.

Questions:
How much does it weight ? Ive been looking around and can't find any weight on it.

Airport security mainly X-ray will that damage the Mac Pro ? I rather not put it out of the bag for theft reasons .

Any other recommendations or things to think about that I've might forgotten please make a reply .

Be aware that crossing borders can invalidate your Applecare if you have purchased it...had this a while back with an iPad that went from the UK to the USA...despite having 2 years of warranty remaining, Apple refused to apply it in the States so the recipient had to repurchase AC there.

If you try to "sneak" it in .... good luck ... then you get extra charges for
NOT declaring the goods !!! .... they can get pretty expensive.

If you declare, then that could be as expensive as buying in Sweden anyway.

All of that on top of the Apple care / warranty issues.... I wouldn't do it.

If you are talking about new Mac Pro, you will have to be in the USA at lease 2 months. There is no nMP at any Apple retail store except the ones in the display for demo and showcase.

Yeah, that happend to a friend of mine when he bought a Macbook Pro Retina in US. Ended up to be more expensive then in Sweden haha!

A MacBook can be declared as your own and used while traveling with it.
A stationary computer...and such a new one (!) might be difficult to have the customers believe it, even without the original box...
You are taking risks, that'd for sure.
Besides somebody said that it might be difficult to find ready available in the USA.
Another point is that in most cases if you give the address of a US friend for delivery, US sales taxes will apply.
Check in any case with a big US retailer first if they have it in stock and then if they won't charge you with US sales taxes.
However to try to smuggle it remains a big risk.

If in your family or among your friends somebody is studying in a University or similar educational institution, buying it in his name will grant you Apple's Educational price. You get it a bit cheaper without taking any risk and there is no
problem for you to change ownership from him to you before buying Apple Care.
That is absolutely legal.
The new MacPros are certainly much much smaller and lighter than the old ones, but not so small and not so light that smuggling one might be an easy task!
You might find it difficult to prove to anybody checking your luggage, and not knowing the new MacPro, that you are not carrying some kind of bomb if you remove it from its box, and in the box it will clearly show it is a brand new purchase.

If you actually want to save money you'll have to be able to convince the customs agents that you already had it prior to leaving home, usually works with a laptop, but I think you'll have a hard time with a desktop. If you go the safe route and declare it you'll likely end up spending more as you'll pay US sales tax plus Swedish tax. Almost all of the markup in Europe is due to the fact that tax is included in the advertised price over there while it isn't in the US, the base price may vary a bit based on the exchange rate, but it isn't a big markup.

I didn't know that, I'm used to the US where there is no customs when leaving the country so they have no way of making you declare what you have when you leave.

I did this exact thing with a Mac mini, a couple of Apple TV's and two iPad 2's in 2011. Where are you flying back in? In my experience if you are re-entering in Gbg the chances of you getting checked by customs are extremely low. I've been in and out of there at least 20 times in the past five years since I moved here from San Diego, and have not been checked once, and can count on one hand the number of times the customs station has actually even been manned and open.

I didn't know that, I'm used to the US where there is no customs when leaving the country so they have no way of making you declare what you have when you leave.

But if you take a shiny object out of the US, you may be asked to show the receipt upon re-entry.

If you can't prove that you bought it stateside, you could be dinged for duty.

(If you raise a fuss, they can "impound" it for a few months to check the disks.)

Yeah I think the only other kind of keyboard you can get in the US is a Spanish one, and I'm not sure that they actually keep those in stock or if you have to special order them.

Just tell them it's a trash can. I doubted anyone at custom knows what the new nMP looks like.

If you order it online beforehand you can choose a rMBP with a swedish keyboard. I will just use my Friends adress, who lives in US. And then we will pick it up when I arrive. shouldn't be a big deal. I can't see how it could be, when you can pick it with a Swedish keyboard ??

Yeah, I have bought a couple of iPads and iPhones in the past, but they have never checked me. Not even with my Mac mini. That was Arlanda Airport.

Of course I cannot expect to get a rMBP with a Swedish keyboard by just walking into a store and say I want it. BUT! I can choose a rMBP whit Swedish keyboard if I order it online. Then I just use my friends US address and pick it up. I cannot see how that would get me any issues?

I thought Applecare was international.

Though reading up, it looks like you need Applecare + for intenational.

Could you not buy the nMP in US and buy local applecare?
