Buying a Macbook at a Apple Retail store

Hey guys,

Im planning to buy a black macbook tomorrow in the Regent Street Apple Store in London. Will they give me a Higher education discount (im a undergrad at Plymouth), or will they only give me the basic student discount? The difference in price is quite large (between HE and student) and any money saving would be awesome.

Another question is:
Im buying the macbook to write my dissertation over the christmas holidays. Does it come preinstalled with any word processing software (non-trial) which is compatable with windows machines? Im going to install Parallels, but a OSX word processor would be generally better for my work. I have a few MS word files which I have already written, I assume these will work fine on the macbook out of the box?

Hey, you can open Word .doc files in TextEdit which comes pre-installed, but it wouldn't be the ideal app to write a dissertation. Pages (part of iWork) is installed as a time-limited demo, which would get you through the holidays.
 
Yes, you should consider an Apple store. You can actually see what you purchase, plus you get to shoot the bull with them a while.

Most people use MS Office on Macs. Education copy is only like $100. There's a few built-in WPs that come with the OS. Also check out http://neooffice.org/

You're doing your entire disseration in 2 weeks? Good luck!
 
The Macbook comes preloaded with both MS Office and iWorks... Both of those are trial versions, but, since you said you are gonna do it over the holidays, you should be good... Hehe... After that you will need to buy something... If you use Word 2004, because of the Rosetta emulation, go into prefferences and unclick some of the options like live word count, etc... it will make it run so much faster...
 
What do you mean higher education pricing and student? there is only 1, they are the same.

Oh, I was just responding to the post that assnose guy wrote - he wanted a wp to help him write his entire thesis in two weeks. Although a stretch, I'd go buy Office at Office Depot or something.

And you're right - education is education. You'll get 5 lic's with it, to use on as many computers as far as I know.

Get rid of the demo that comes on OSX ASAP. Also remove it before you install the real version. I think you're also right - it hamstrings it into not printing or something.

But really - don't forget neooffice.org - they do a great job without Xwin
 
Yeah dont actually buy word yet because its emulated. Its not going to run very well. If I were you I'd stick with the trial as long as I could

no they are not. Have a look on the UK apple website. Normal Student discount (for people on none uni networked pcs) gives you a discount, while HE discount is on top of that (usually given off a uni computer). Im fairly certain that it is the same in the US
 
In the US, we have the ADC Student discount and an education discount. The ADC Discount is given if you are an ADC member, which is $100 per year. The discount is only valid once, ever, but is pretty good on the MBPs. The normal education discount, is the normal one. Its only available to college students, period.
 
I bought my MacBook with the HE student discount, saved £100 on the RRP. There is a rather large difference in the pricing between HE and FE discounts.

(HE = higher education ie, university)
(FE = further education ie, college)
