I'm about to buy a Macbook Pro once I can amass the funds and sell my powerbook. I would like to know though if I buy from an Apple Store in SoHo are the ones in stock only stock specs? Can I ask them to add components such as the 100gb 7200 rpm hard drive or extra memory or is that only done at the factory?

sometimes (this happened to me at SoHo, but i don't think they always do this) they have two sets, one stock, and one with more RAM and HDD. They can't customize the machine for you. Also, the MBPs will probably sell out day 1. good luck. the SoHo store is really busy. i know. i've been there.

Not 100% sure about 'true-blue' Apple stores, but most Apple Authorized Resellers can/will sell you one with upgraded RAM. Some will upgrade the hard drive for you, too, but those are few and far between. (Desktops are much more likely to have this offered than laptops.)

And yes, Apple Stores often carry 'stock' models, plus a few upgraded ones as a 'standard package'. (For example, they offered 'wireless' iMac G5s, which were pre-loaded with AirPort and Bluetooth, and came with the Apple Wireless Keyboard and Mouse in the box; a setup not available as 'stock' on the online store, but one that was build-to-order.)

well when i got an iBook from SoHo, they put in an AirPort card for us. They just said that it would be considered "opened box" if we wanted to return it. A half hour later i walk out of the store with an iBook with AirPort. That is easy though. we bought the airport card, and then (back when this happened) they brought it to the mysterious down stairs, open the box, lift the keyboard off, put the airport card in (if you remember the iBook G4 before built in, they have 2 little tabs between i believe the f2 and f3 buttons and the f10 and f11), put it back in the box, seal the box with tape. the only equipment needed was a box cutter to open the tape. Putting in RAM and a HDD requires opening the machine and taking things out, putting them in, etc. The apple store wouldn't do anything that you could not do at home with minimal effort. All of the upgraded things they try to sell you (as in the upgraded RAM and HDD, see above) are BTO that apple sends them.

typically Apple Stores will install RAM for you at the store but not hard drives

If you're trying to get a MacBook sooner by going to a store instead of ordering online, good luck. There were people stalking the Oakbrook Apple Store when the Mini came out every morning when they opened. I hope you're vigilant about getting one if you're going to try to get it from the Apple store anytime soon.

Guys,

Could any New Yorker call/go to the SoHo Apple Store and ask them when they will be getting the MacBook Pros? (I am sure all foreigners travelling to New York..lol... will be really grateful :))

..Also, If they start selling them the 15th, do you think they'll continue to get more units every 5 days or so?...Or after the 15th they are not going to get anything till March?

I don't think it'll matter whether you go to a brick and mortar store or not. I think most of us will be waiting a long time for them. Buying from a store probably won't help.

FYI, Apple Store employees get their information from mac rumor sites like these, they have no idea.

Exactly...

Completely true. Every once in a while, an unmarked shipment MIGHT arrive the night before something new is released but no one ever knows what it is.
The employees have just as much information as the general public.
