Buying a mini in New York

Hi there!

Off to New York next week (from the UK) and am considering buying a mini there. I have a few questions:

- I'm most interested in the 1.66GHz dual - with 1G of memory, BUT I don't really want to fit the memory upgrade myself. Does the Apple store have bigger configurations of the mini in stock, or will the Genius bar do a while-you-wait upgrade?

- The UK mini comes with a universal (110/240) power supply. Is that true of the US version?

- Generally, are stock levels good now, at NY retail stores?

- Are there any better places to shop for this than an Apple store?

There is only one Apple store in NYC at the moment and it is located in SOHO. A new one will open later on in Spring at around 5 ave and 59th street. The mac mini seems to be in stock there and they do offer a Mini Ultimate version that has memory and HD upgrades. I suggest you call them when you do get in just to see what they have or just pay a visit. Of course you can always have them upgrade the memory for you.

Other stores in the city that are authorized Apple sellers are J and R Music World and Tekserve.

to OP in regards to this quote: Unless you're staying in Staten Island (which i doubt), don't go to the trouble to get there from manhattan. No subway to get there, you either have to take the ferry or go into Brooklyn and go on the bridge. SoHo is much more convienient because of the subway stations near by.

I also recommend going to an apple store. not to many other places carry it, but generally, i personally feel safer buying from apple.

C'mon yankeefan there's live outside midtown

The ferry to Staten Island is free and (still ) provides a very nice view of manhattan, takes less than 15' one way.

I only was at Tekserve once (to get my powerbook repaired) but i think it's really great and there is a good chance they sell 3d-party memory and install it for free.

True. I forgot about that one. I guess most of us in the other bouroughs usuallly do not include SI as being part of NYC. Don't think we do it purposely is just so many of us don't head out there unless we live there or work there. No wonder there's sometimes talk of them splitting from the 5 bouroghs. But that's a totally different topic.

To the OP, I prefer the Apple Store in SOHO to the 3rd party retails, especially since you are not a local and something goes wrong you have to fly in to visit the store and have to deal with Apple in the long run anyway. You can always go to an Apple Store nearest to you and get service if bought from an Apple store.

I think if you buy it in NJ (just across the Hudson River), you can save a few bucks on taxes. Whenever I have a choice to buy something either in NY or NJ, I buy it in NJ (because of its lower sales tax).

The only Apple store in NY is in SoHo, but there are a few nearby (though not in NYC or Manhattan)

And, the US minis only contain the US Powercords, but they sell the adapter cords at the store.

And, I think they will replace the RAM in store, but I'm not sure.

Regardless of how many stores there are in the boroughs, the SoHo Store is definitely worth a trip simply because of the fact that it's a Flagship. It's a great store to visit and you would kick yourself for not going.

As for upgrades, they should upgrade the RAM for you in the Store as long as you don't mind paying Apple's hiked memory prices. But if you don't want to put the RAM in yourself then this is the only way to go.
