I have a friend who wants to buy a new pc for gaming purposes. He said he wanted to have a pc that could play World Of Warcraft at resonable settings with very good frame rate.

At first I said it was simple because World of Warcraft doesn't demand much of the computer. However, he said his budget was only 400 dollars.

i know you guys are knowledgble in constructing a new computer. Can you suggest some sites? Can you tell me what is essential for a gaming comp? What sacrifices should I make for a cheap pc?

I don't think that is a realistic budget, unless he already has the monitor. You didn't mention that.

Look in the marketplace, maybe request you're looking for a PC. There's plenty of Mac users always looking to ditch their PC for some cash. Maybe one can even tell you how WoW runs on it.

search for what you want, you might be surprised, but you might have to wait a bit to see a deal coming up as low as $400.
i got a pc A YEAR AGO for $350 AFTER TAX, with AMD Athlon 3200+, WD 200 SATA HD, 256MB RAM, and built-in graphic. and i threw in a 512mb ram and a dedicated graphic card and i was happy.

WOW will look a lot better if you throw money at it.

But, like all Blizzard games, it can run on a "normal" PC.

Which most other soft co's seem unable or unwilling to do.

$400 is a tight budget to get good frame rates on WoW. Alll cheap Dell's come with integrated video which is terrible for WoW.

Ehh.. 400 dollars for a PC that can play wow is going to be extreamly tough.... http://www.newegg.com for all your computer parts and good luck

I totally agree w/ this poster...get a good mobo (~100), processor (~125), ram (~75), graphics card (~125), and harddrive (~50)...

if you are just gaming buy a cheap dvd-rom...dont need a floppy drive...most mobo's have onboard audio...

buy a cheap case too...you can get a decent case w/ 500 w power supply for around 40 or 50...

yeah...that is going to put you over 400...just go to pricegrabber and look up the parts and decide...not sure on the quality you are looking for...

$600 is better. Im looking into getting a new gaming computer for myself. A few tips.

1. Go with AMD. They are cheaper and more efficent than the Intel equilivent.
2. ibuypower.com you choose every aspect of your PC.
3. Lower end graphics card. I suggest an nVidia 6600.

If you only have 400 to spend you can get:

Tower $50.00
MB-Combo $225.00 2.8ghz/512mb
DVD/CD-rw $50.00
Spend the rest on Video card and you have a good PC for $400
I build them all the time for work.

Nice site!

I tricked out my own comp and ended up with a 1300 dollar pc which was cheaper than I bought from another site 5 months ago.

The tricked out comp has AMD 3800+Dual Core, 2 GB Ram, Geforce 7800 GT 256 MB, the best sound card and some other stuff which was way better than my comp that I bought 5 months ago.

PC hardware is now better by a long shot than Apple(IBM) hardware. X86 components are the best choice. I am a windows user and I most people complain about windows but thats because windows isn't very idiot-proof. Both OSes have their strengths and weaknesses. Back in the day, computer programmers and computer users were the same thing. When the split-off from workstations came in the early 90s, apple got the idea that most users aren't programmers...microsoft didnt....They tried to make a poor quality operating system to cater to such users but it was a poor attempt. WinNT was their workstation system but isn't easy to use or configure. 2000 and Xp try to bridge that gap, but some of the idiot-proof features are starting to bug me and if they put more idiot-proof features in vista, then Ill probably have to switch to another OS like redhat and run a windows environment emulator on OpenDirectX. The key is apple makes a lot of money off of shotty hardware. Running MacOSX on PC components is very refreshing. Macs cant really be used for any production. The only thing that they can be used for is vector design. Win has a major flaw when managing many fonts, and as for which, I just multiboot into MacOsX86 with homebrew ntfs drivers.

Um... How does your troll alert answer my question?

with grunting sounds... (sorry..)

OK, to help with your friends' question. Look through ads (online and paper) for a MB/CPU combo. He want's something with AGP (keep cost down, still good enough for WOW), at least 512 MB ram (should go for 1GB if affordable), and on-board sound. Get a cheap DVD/CD drive, and a SATA HDD and a cheap (maybe a old, discarded case from a friend?) case. Spend whatever extra $$ on a good video card. I would suggest looking @ WOW's specs to see what they recommend for the video card. ( I don't want to start anything about the ATI/nVidia debate- personally I use them both, for different things.)
I did this over the summer, and I ended up spending $1300 (without having to buy HDD's, DVD, Floppy, or PS), granted, it wasn't low budget, but it got outta hand.. (check my sig, it's Sauron)

OK, where do I begin... Is it even worth it to try to debate this...

I worked for a PC manufacturer for many years. I built everything from single-purpose Linux boxes, to 8 way Xeon and Itanium2 servers. From a hardware point of view, unless you are spending thousands on your new PC, the hardware is crap. Case in point- my PB is almost 5 years old. I have one scratch (less than a 1/4 inch long), it was dropped from over 4 Ft. in the air, while running, with the screen opened. If I didn't point it out, you'd never know I dropped it. Did anything happen to it- No. the OS never hiccupped, nothing stoped working. On the other hand, my boss's laptop (varoius units we sold there- Mitac and Getac, I think) would break all the time. In the 4 years I was there, he went through a new laptop at least every 6 months. Things like the video ribbon breaking, HDD dieing for no reason, mostly just weird stuff. All stuff relating to bad quality control. I have countless stories of faulty PC hardware- I could ramble on forever, but that's not my point.

If you are just compairing PPC to x86, the point is mute, Apple will be x86 soon enough. Personally, I love my PPC G5. I also love how fast my AMD dualcore is too. I'll be a happy camper when I can get OS X for my AMD.

From a software point of view, XP is crap (W2K was their best OS). I have spent most of my life fixing corrupt MS OS's. Sure, there's more Apps for it, sure most people already know their way around. I don't think it has anything to do with "idiot-proofing". Windows is so full of holes, unless you are a power user, and know how to maintain your OS, it's bound to be screwed up after only a few days online. From a "my grandma just wants to surf the internet, and read e-mail" point of view, OS X is WAY better. Need to do maintanence on your Mac?, just leave it on Sunday night.
Need to do maintanence on your PC?, OK, open disk mamagement, run a defrag. now run a spyware sweep (using several software packages, cause no one program does everything correct), now check for Viruses.. Clean? If not, and you get that virus, then what?? When was the last time you had to Format/reload OS X because some 3rd party app changed things around without you knowing?? (or when was the last time you took a call from a friend/relative, and had to walk them through it)? How 'bout XP???

OK, so what I really want to say is this: If you are a sysadmin (or just very PC savvy), XP is fine. Keep it clean and virus free, and enjoy your games. If you just want to use your computer like it was meant to be, buy a Mac. If you are happy tweeking the registry, messing with DLL's and all that funn stuff, enjoy XP. If you want your computer to "just work", but a Mac.

I love the fact that when I annually reinstall XP, the OS can't find its own drivers on disk (just to add to your cleaning, DLL, and tweaking rant). Long live the MAC!

Hmmmmmm I run both PCs and Macs. My laptop is over 4 years old is a PC with Win2k on it. Never had to reinstall it. Mac was a waste of time to try to fool with until OS X came along. With the Unix undercarrage it is one of the best combinations going. Of course I change everything. I am running what used to be a G4-Sawtooth 400mhz ....... You notice I said used to be. Now it is a G4-Sawtooth 1.25Ghz, 1.5mb dual 120gig HDD and I am looking at doing some more modifing.
However I am a sysadmin, CS TSM student-old man and the server that I run so all of my machines will play friendly with each other is a FBSD server. So now if you really want a trouble free box FBSD is the way to go. However it is not a gamers box.

Just my 2 cents
