I need some buying advice. I came across a used MacBook Pro 16" 2019 with a Core i9, 32GB Ram & 5500M Graphics. Would you guys buy it over a new entry M2 MacBook Air? I mainly want to use it for UI/UX design and light gaming. The cost is about the same, but the MacBook Pro 16" is out of warranty, and I'm a bit concerned about flexgate down the line.

Open to suggestions/advice! Thanks!

I would go for the M2 Air, either 13" or 15" over an older Intel any day of the week. It'll be night and day for your work stuff and will last the distance further than the Intel.

Honestly, I couldn't resist not getting the Core i9, 32GB, 1TB, 5500M variant. It cost me the same as an entry level M2 MacBook Air. I love it, but it's much larger than I'd expected. I think it'll be fine once I get used to it. I love it so far. It means I can play Diablo 4 using Bootcamp and do my design work with ease with that 32GB of ram.

If Bootcamp was a criteria for choosing between those two laptops, then your answer was pretty straightforward.

Hmm yes (strokes beard). I’m just hoping you’re not going to regret that choice when the 2019 Intels go out of support in a few years time.

These are two very different machines with two very different sets of strengths and weaknesses.

The 2019 16-inch MacBook Pro is best if you need things that REQUIRE you to be using an x86 machine, let alone an Intel Mac. If you use Windows for gaming, the 2019 16-inch MacBook Pro is the only option. If all of your games can run fine in either macOS or in a VM running the ARM64 version of Windows 11, then I'd say you probably don't need a 2019 16-inch MacBook Pro.

Also, flexgate only really affected 2016 and 2017 13-inch MacBook Pros. 15-inch MacBook Pros largely weren't affected and it stopped being an issue with the 2018 models.
