Hello everyone im looking for a little advice. My 2014 macbook pro 13, recently got wet and longer works and im looking at investing in a new mac, i just need help finding which model and specs would best suit me.

i would be using the mac for my primary movie and tv show watching ( i prefer to watch on my laptop not tv) so display is key. I would also be using for Everday web surfing, twitch, emails, etc...

i dont want a slugglish laptop, i want to be able to have multiple windows open, multiple streams and it to run smoothly. Should i purchase a intel mac now if so which one best fits me? Or do i wait for arm based macs.

OK, what seems clear is:
  • you want a laptop not a desktop
  • 13 inch has worked for you
  • your use case is not dependent on Intel but would work also with ARM Macs
Therefore, you are rather free in your options unless this

lacks a „no“ and means your device „no longer works“. In that case, hurry is needed. At least I could not be without a computer :)

If you can wait, I would indeed wait a few weeks until November when we all expect the first real life Apple Silicon Mac that, according to the vast majority of guesses, will be a laptop. And as we all hope for better performance with less heat, this could be fitting for your usage.

If you cannot wait, you have a wide range of options. Even a Macbook Air could already be sufficient, rather the i5 or i7 with 16 GB RAM than the base model. Some people here are dissatisfied with fans, thermals and throttling, others not; one idea is buying at a seller (Apple, i.e.) that gives you the option of returning the device.

But multiple things open could do better with a Macbook Pro. The base model MBP 13 with additional RAM should meet your demands. If money is not an issue you could max out the MBA, or the MBP 13, or even think of a MBP 16. You could also look at the Apple refurbished store where rather many of the 2020 MBA and MBP 13, and 2019 MBP 16 are offered from time to time. I personally would leave out the 2016 to 2018/9 models due to the butterfly keyboard.
