buying an AppleTV with no HDD - questions

i've thought about buying an AppleTV without a HDD and just adding one later. How hard would it be to get the AppleTV software to load onto a spare HDD that i have? would it even be worth it? thanks

eBay of course and moneys tight, got a wedding to save for but i love my gadgets plus im the type that likes putting stuff together and seeing how they work

The AppleTV will be useless without an HD. It needs the drive to boot from and store its buffer.

You could potentially do a direct image restore onto another hard drive, from a backup disk image from another ATV. I've done it before. There's a lot of potential pitfalls though, and it's not something that I would consider worthwhile. I only did it because I accidentally fried my original ATV installation, and it took me a long time. I don't even remember which method eventually worked.
