Hi,

I've pretty much made the decision to buy a new iMac. I would like to buy from a physical Apple store (Meadowhall) because I can just drive there and not have to wait a few days for delivery...

Couple of questions, though.

- Can I get an education discount in a physical store? If so, what ID do I need?

- Which 27" models are stocked in store? Will they have i5 and i7 or are these build-to-order models only?

Any help much appreciated.

Steve.

I'm not sure what it's like in the UK, but if its anything like in Australia there's a very limited chance you'll get a 27" iMac (i5 or i7) that's in stock and not reserved. I phoned all 5 stores in my City (Canberra, Australia) and not one had a 27" iMac in stock.

If you want to buy from a physical store, get them to place an order (and then you get to wait 4-6 weeks for it to arrive! fun times).

Good Luck!

Wow. I had no idea. They do sell i7's, though?

Steve.

I got my iMac from an Apple store inside a Currys. It wasn't in stock at that store, but they got it from a nearby store and I had it the next day.

Yep, Apple is selling 27" iMacs with i7's in them, but I don't know how that affects shipping times. I've ordered an iMac with the i7 (from a physical store) and they didn't say anything about not selling them.

In the UK the i5 is one of the standard units in store. They have to order the i7 in for you, with the same lead times as if you ordered it off the apple online store.

As for your discount you will need to produce a valid student union card or some other form of proof. I get a discount with Apple as I work for Pepsico, when I got my macbook I had to take my work ID and a payslip, when I got my time machine they only wanted to see my work ID. This is in the same store.

Thank you -- that's exactly what I wanted to know. I am unsure, now, whether I should just go for the i5 or accept a 3 week online wait for the i7...

well for me whenever that q comes up i always take the long view.

how will that 3 weeks look 2 years from now?

I don't know if anything has changed since I was up there for Uni (2003-2008) but the educational discount in store was less than the higher education discount you can get online.

Phone the store any ask them a.) If they have the i7 in store b.) How much discount you'll actually get in store.

I bought my imac 27 inch from a physical store and it took around 10 minutes walk to get from the shop to my car. Boy, both arms were seriously aching after that walk.....

Common sense would have said to order online but I just had to get that baby right there and then :)

I would say get the i7. you might not notice the punch for your pound today but in years time you will.

Im getting one at the end of March.
