Buying an iPAD 3G when in the US

If I buy an iPAD 3G when in the US will i be able to use it with a UK data provider in UK on my return?

Yes provided the uk provider uses the same 3G bands.

Supposedly the 3Gs are going to be released in the rest of the world at the same time as the US. So why would you want to buy one here in the first place?

This one's easy to answer. The SIM will need to be activated with a data plan before you insert it into the iPad, just like any other smartphone or data card.

Only iPads sold thru carriers and with a carrier specific SIM included, will be able to buy and renew their data plans in the iPad.

The iPad might not be carrier locked, but it does include a carrier specific SIM. U.S. bought iPads will come with an AT&T Micro-SIM and Europe's with a Vodaphone one. If you want to go with another carrier, it's the old fashion way

Also I think each 3G ipad will have an app or something in the settings to turn the service. There is no guarantee that EU carriers will offer service without a contract. But the short of it is a 3g ipad will work with any carrier that supports micro SIM and the bands the ipad supports.
