Hey folks,

Great forums! I've been using them for a while to solve problems with my iPod Touch, but now the time has come to upgrade to an iPhone 3G (Pay as you go, 02 in the UK) which is released next week. I have a few questions, if you could help clarify I would be grateful.

1) I understand that it is essential that I activate the phone when I get it home through iTunes. Should I/must I do this before I can do any form of jailbreak?

2) What 2.x firmware would you recommend jailbreaking? Should I wait awhile until the 2.1 firmware comes out, or should I just stick with one of the 2.0.x ones? If so, which one?

3) Finally, what is the best method for me to go by for jailbreaking? I will be an 02 pay as you go customer on an iPhone 3G, if this makes any difference. Please point me to which of these guides I should use!

Thanks very much for your time! :)

make sure you purchase it in an UNLOCKED country where the phone wont be bound to any carrier is the only way i know this will work.

This was the old 2g iphone where AT&T allowed you to actually activate from home. THe new 3g requires in store activation. IM not aware of how this works in other countries. if they allow activation through home then thats great. And the answer would be yes, you have to actiavate the phone to even start using it.

2) What 2.x firmware would you recommend jailbreaking? Should I wait awhile until the 2.1 firmware comes out, or should I just stick with one of the 2.0.x ones? If so, which one?

You can jailbreak to the lastest one of 2.01 im not suer about 2.02 and 2.1 firmware upgrade3s.

3) Finally, what is the best method for me to go by for jailbreaking? I will be an 02 pay as you go customer on an iPhone 3G, if this makes any difference. Please point me to which of these guides I should use!

As to my knowledge this wont work. you can jail break only not unlock and use a different carrier. You can use QuickPWn that is already listed in this forum

It is not possible to software unlock a iPhone 3G at the moment, so you must either purchase it online from another country which sells them unlocked or do a hardware unlock such as TurboSIM...but before I would do either of those I would honestly just buy the 2G iPhone.

2) What 2.x firmware would you recommend jailbreaking? Should I wait awhile until the 2.1 firmware comes out, or should I just stick with one of the 2.0.x ones? If so, which one?

As of right now (9/10/2008) firmware up to 2.0.2 is jailbroken, however if you were to get it tomorrow I would wait a week or two until it is possible to jailbreak 2.1

3) Finally, what is the best method for me to go by for jailbreaking? I will be an 02 pay as you go customer on an iPhone 3G, if this makes any difference. Please point me to which of these guides I should use!

If you are using a Mac, use PwnageTool 2.0.3.1 to jailbreak 2.0.2 software, if using Windows, use WinPwn to jailbreak 2.0.2 software. Keep in mind, like I said before that 2.1 will most likely be jailbroken in 1-2 weeks max, in which case you would need an update to either of those software versions, so it might be worth waiting.

Thanks very much for all the replies, but I think I may have mislead you both with the 1st question. I do not want to unlock my iPhone 3G, I am quite happy to use it on 02. I was simply asking if I must activate my phone through iTunes before I will be able to jailbreak.

Thanks again!
