I'm buying an iphone on apple.com this week, but I was wondering if it's better to buy it in store or have it shipped? Will both have the new 3.1 firmware? I'd prefer it didn't since I want to jailbreak my phone.

I wonder if it will have MMS enabled or will you have to update when you get home?

on a side note how come apple just doesn't throw the new Carrier update in 3.1 on the servers so if someone restores or updates to 3.1 and downloads a fresh copy from the apple servers they don't have to do the carrier update as well

Oh ok thats a bummer. I was hoping to get one with 3.0.1 firmware on it. Thanks for the replies.

Unfortunately for you, the phone most likely will, because you have to activate somewhere, whether it be at the apple store or at home, and you will be required to use the 3.1 firmware that iTunes downloads.

Got a replacment iPhone 3gs today because of some touch screen issues, came with 3.0.1.

I just got a replacement 3Gs 2 days ago, it came with 3.1 on it. Also, before I synched at home, the MMS was already up and running, but this could have happened in the store. The rep told me I had to put 3.1 on there, but it was pre-installed.

Friend picked up a new 3GS at the AT&T store on wednesday and it came with 3.1

I just picked one up with 3.0.1 on it yesterday at AT&T. Although I upgraded to 3.1 anyway because I couldn't use certain apps.
