Buying an iphone

I am considering purcashing an iphone on my next visit to america.

The only piece of information i cant find out about is if i can use the iphone as in ipod wihtout the contract to at&t?

I have spent over an hr on both the forums and the apple site trying to get information and havent gotten anywere..

Any information would be greatly apperciated.
