Hi,

I am going to ask my uncle, who lives in the US to buy me a 16 gig iPhone.

I want to know if he can just go right in a store selling the iPhone buy it and send it to me.

I mean is there a special way for him tom buy it so that he will not be bothered by AT&T's monthly bill?

I heard that if he pays with VISA that they would use his credit card info to send him the bills. Is that true?

Please help me clear my doubts, i want one of those babies.

Your uncle can simply walk into an apple store and purchase a phone. The ATT part isnt until you activate it via itunes (may eb diffrent for att stores, nto sure if theyll sell you the phoen straight up). Once you get it back, downgrade it, jailbreak, unlock and you're set!

good luck

Ok, so they won't be billing him afterwards right? He does not need to inform anyone that he does not want any plan?

No, when you buy the iPhone, you need to activate it at your house, so after he buys it, all he has is the iPhone, no plan, no affiliation for any companies. After he buys it, he could just send it you and then you could unlock it and go from there...

I bought mine from an ATT store last fall, The salesman asked for a bunch of info to put me "into the system" (which I thought was weird since I was not setting up the iphone there in the store, not to mention that I had been with ATT for 10 years and thought they had every piece of info on me already), they said it would make the registration process easier when I get home. I believe I could have refused to give the info if I had wanted to. I'm not sure if they're still doing that or not, and don't think it's a big deal.

I just thought of this,

You guys think that the iPhone will still be software unlockable after the SDK release?

If not i will have to talk with him this week!!

It is...
Just downgrade to 1.1.1, jailbreak, oktoprep, 1.1.2, run geohot's gunlock...
Just look into it further because it is risky...

I know it is unlockable at the moment, but my question was not that.

I am assuming that with the SDK there will be a new firmware version will be released. Does that mean that Geohot's method will have no effect? (For OOTB 1.1.4?)

The reason is because i am not sure when my uncle will come here for holidays, so i don't know if i should ask him to buy it now or a few months from now.
