My friend is getting the 3G iPhone soon, and I want to buy his old iPhone. I already am on an ATT plan, and I have a RAZR as a phone right now. If I buy his phone, can I just switch out the sim card, and use it just as my own?? No hassle whatsoever?

No, you will need to go to AT&T and get an iPhone specific SIM.

While the new 3G iPhones will accept any SIM card, the 2G phones require a "special" sim.

Complete BS. I just did it last night using an old sim card. You can just use your existing sim card from whatever phone and then plug it into itunes.

So, I can take my RAZR's sim card out, shove it into the iPhone, put it on iTunes, and then what? When i activate it through iTunes, do I have to restart my current 2 year plan, that would normally end in November? Or, will I just be using the iPhone, and kept on the same exact plan, nothing changing except the phone I'd be using?

I don't recall if you have to extend your 2 year plan, but everything else is correct. I pulled the sim card out of my gf's Sony phone and plugged it in the 2G phone and it was working. Only thing is that she had to wait about 6 hours before the phone was activated, I think it had something to do with her plan being under her sister's name and she registered the phone using her own itune account.

What exactly happened through the activation process on iTunes? Everywhere I read about it, it says it requires a credit card, and this is what makes me wonder if it restarts my 2 year plan, which would end in November of this year. I'd rather not restart it!

Yes, it will require credit card. But like I said, I don't recall if it restarts the 2 year plan.

I am not sure why they will require credit card information but when you are activating, they do prompt you to sign up for the iPhone feature which is an extra $20 on top of your existing ATT plan.

$20 extra every month? What for, I thought you didn't need the data plan for the original iPhone.

Yes! You do need it. I know the data plan for the old iPhone is less expensive than the new one but you need it for any iphone.

:( is there anyway over the $20 data plan? any unlocking technique?

You do know that without data plan, you can only access using wifi right? I recall few threads here and there about getting out of the $20 data plan.
