Is there any reason why it wouldn't work?

The reason I ask is because I'm in New York for a few days next week.

Check the power supply. If it's 110v then you'll need a transformer. If it's 110v-240v then you should be OK.

Forgot about that one :D I was thinking more along the lines of it being region locked etc?

The Apple site says that it has a universal power supply which suggests that it is 100-240v.

I'm in Texas in a few weeks so I'm also interested in whether a US unit would work in the UK, but I was thinking along the same lines as the OP in that there might be some sort of region lock? The US version has Netflix which the UK version doesn't, but I thought that access to US only features might controlled by determining your location using your iTunes account or IP address?

I hope that there is no region lock and the only difference between the two is Netflix.

I was planning to buy the US version and use netflix in the UK via VPN. Works great at the moment on the iPad and hopefully will work the same on :apple:TV...

There will be another problem though when UK providers will start rolling out their services to :apple:TV.

I'd really like to know how Apple will handle new services without having some kind of App Store on it... Firmware updates?

I'm hoping that you won't even need to get a US Apple TV to get Netflix via VPN -- it's not really like Apple to have different functionality tied to different hardware in different regions (apart from China etc). With any luck the Netflix functionality will be built into all the Apple TVs, just waiting for a US iTunes Store Account and/or US IP address to awaken it. Who knows though.

One thing you might find is that, unlike the iPad, the Apple TV won't have an easily-accessible VPN client that you can just configure and flick on -- you'd have to make sure you had a router-based VPN client, or route the Apple TV through your VPN-connected computer, or something.

Very interested to see how this all plays out anyway.

I bought the US ATV for use in the UK anyway because I objected to paying exactly the same price in Pounds with absolutely no currency conversion what-so-ever on Apple's part!?!?

I know I won't have saved much but its the principle, especially when you think the UK version has a limited "Official" functionality with no netflix, charging the same amount is somewhat cheeky to say the very least!

Wouldn't the fact that there is VAT included in the UK price and sales tax NOT included in the US price account for most of that (lack of) difference?

Partially, the VAT in the UK is 17.5%, the local tax in Florida where I bought the ATV was 7%, so the ATV actually cost $105.93 instead of $99.

Using the total ATV price of $105.93 in the USA, that works out at £68.34 using a rate of 1.55 Dollars to the Pound.
When you look at it that way, its still a 1/3rd cheaper in the USA, that's quite significant really, especially since there's less features available in the UK.

Not exactly what you've asked, but

I bought my ORIGINAL Apple TV in the UK, works everywhere else in the world I've tried to use it (with my £9.99 Boots universal travel plug adapter). Worked perfectly in Dubai, Singapore, Aus, NZ and US. Took my own HDMI cable of course.
