Buying Domain: UK (123reg) or USA (GoDaddy)

Hey,

I've designed my website in iWeb and I want to launch it today. I have my .Mac Account setup, and all I need now is a domain name.

Don't know where to buy it from? UK with www.123-reg.co.uk or USA with www.godaddy.com

UK - 8.99 per year
USA - 5.04 per year

I need one site to have CNAME and the other (which I'll launch next month) with the standard masking/forwarding.

From other people who use Mac, what should I do?

Any registrar should be able to handle what you need, as you just have to point the domain to your .mac web space with a CNAME.

Personally, I use 1and1 for domain registration (123-reg are owned by Pipex/Tiscali, who are a bunch of muppets....).

1and1.co.uk, GoDaddy, MyDomains.com, NamesDirect.com - any one will be fine.

Do bear in mind that the one downside of using .Mac for hosting your domain is that you will not be able to receive mail addressed to you@yourdomain.com. You'll need to host with a mainstream provider for that.

I use ukreg.com however they dont yet have that cname thingy I have an iWebsite with .mac too and have web and email forwarding set up. I asked about the cname thing (I dont quite understand it) but the guy at ukreg said its not possible yet.

Do bear in mind that the one downside of using .Mac for hosting your domain is that you will not be able to receive mail addressed to you@yourdomain.com. You'll need to host with a mainstream provider for that.

You can receive you just cant send. I have my domain email address forwarded to my .mac address. To send from my domain email address (not .mac) I have to use a 'pop' account from my ISP and have that set to be the default account to send from.

Its possible just a pain the arse!

I tried to sign up for domain name through godaddy once, they make you go through so many screens where they try to upsell you all kinds of things I didn't even get to the payment screen.

I do have domain names hosting from different places.

I used Netfirm.com to register www.hyperphotocube.com, then I hosted it with dreamhost.com. But then again, I had my webmaster friend help me though it. He told me it doesn't matter who handles your domain name as long as they are legit and located in a company that doesn't block access.

They used to offer all that.

Try namecheap.com. It's cheap and relatively simple to use, but has every single function you'd want (and quite a few you wouldn't) to modify your domain. Including CNAME.
